Young was inactive for the Thanksgiving Day Game against the Texans and did not practice last week because of disciplinary reasons following the team’s loss to the Packers two weeks ago.
According to Detroit Free Press beat writer Dave Birkett, in the loss to Green Bay, Young purposely lined up in the wrong spot on the field multiple times and mouthed off to receivers coach Shawn Jefferson on the sideline before being removed for the game’s final series.
“He needed and the team needed a little time away,” head coach Jim Schwartz said Tuesday when Young wasn’t on the practice field. “And that’s not the same with the other inactive guys. But again, it’s not going to be based on what he does away from here, it’s what he does when he’s here with the team.”
Young took reps with the second team and went last in a number of receiving drills during the individual portion of Wednesday's practice.
According to Birkett, Young spent about 15 minutes after practice catching balls off a JUGS machine and declined an interview request when he entered the locker room. He kept his helmet on, with a visor covering his eyes, and said he plans to talk Friday.
Schwartz said it’s “too soon to tell” whether Young will be active for Sunday’s game against the Colts.
“We’ll see, as we get later in the week, who we think the best 46 to play the Colts are and if he’s one of them, he will,” Schwartz said. “If not, then he’ll go back to work and work the next week.”
According to DetroitLions.com's Tim Twentyman, it appears Young will have to earn the trust back from both his head coach and his teammates before he can be an expected contributor on Sunday.
Stay tuned. ... I'll be following along, but it seems like Ryan Broyles will continue as the starter opposite Calvin Johnson until further notice. ...
Also: Johnson was a limited participant Wednesday due to a sore thumb; he'll play as usual. Mikel Leshoure was held out to rest a sore ankle. I'll have more on his status after today's practice.
