Portis Sits; Anderson Practices Wednesday...
While running back Clinton Portis sat out practice -- in a measure that was "more preventative than anything," according to head coach Mike Shanahan -- fullback Mike Anderson did go through the paces just two days after what first appeared to be a violent knee injury.

"I didn't think I was that flexible but after looking at the way it happened and the way my leg was caught underneath, I was thankful," Anderson said.

"Mike looked fine, he had no setbacks, took all the reps -- or a lot of the reps," Shanahan said. "So hopefully there's no swelling tomorrow, and he feels pretty good."

Portis' injury opened the door for rookie Quentin Griffin to get some extra work on Wednesday, two days after he made his first appearance in any kind of NFL game.

"He got a lot of reps today. He looked pretty good," Shanahan said. "I think he's feeling more comfortable with his conditioning, I think he's feeling more comfortable with our system. But it's pretty easy to go in there and get some running plays. It's the total package. He got at least half the reps today, so he's feeling pretty good."

For what it's worth. ....

In an article published after Wednesday's practice, the Associated Press suggested Portis might miss this week's game.

The second-year man suffered a bruised sternum two weeks ago against San Diego and re-injured himself against Oakland on Monday night. He played just two snaps after the second quarter against the Raiders and talked afterward about his ribs popping out of place.

Of course, I'll have more on the status of Portis as the weekend progresses.
