Start Em / Sit Em - Week 3 - Thursday Game

By Brad Kruse

In this Start Em / Sit Em column each week, I'm looking to find some fringe players that you might consider starting each week and comment based on their matchups. Early on, I'll base my selection of candidates on where they were with respect to ADP. I'm not going to try to pad my stats by suggestin your start Drew Brees each week, but instead trying to dig deep and find some nuggets for players to avoid or to go after. These are coin flip guys and if I can finish the year at better than 60% I'll consider it a success. My metrics to get the start decision are: QB 20 pts or more, RB, WR or TE need to score 12 pts or more for a successful endorsement. Defense/Special Teams should put in 8 points or more to get those picks right. I'll look at ~4-6 players on each Thursday night's game and ~ 6 players for the rest of the week to get you going. Good Luck this year!

Player Pos Team Opp Start/Sit Comment
Matt Ryan QB ATL TB SIT This is a difficult Thursday game to come up with starters that should be put on your bench or typically non-starters that should be started. After reviewing the data, my thoughts on Matt Ryan are this: over the last 3 years, Ryan has averaged 17.6 ppg vs. Tampa. That's somewhat underwhelming. Through the first two weeks, Tampa has yielded the 10th least points to opposing QB's (16.1ppg). Albeit that was facing backup QB's for both Carolina and St. Louis. If you have Matt Ryan, you probably don't have a better option, but I'd curtail optimism for him this week.
Bobby Rainey RB TB ATL START Rainey has looked like the better back in the Tampa Bay backfield. He's at least warranted a split time role with Martin. There are mixed reports on Martin's availability for Thursday night. If he goes, I still think Rainey's playable. If Martin sits, you have to start Rainey against (through 2 weeks) the worst run defense in the league.
Steven Jackson RB ATL TB SIT Through two weeks, it looks like this is a 4 headed monster at RB for Atlanta. If any of these 4 running backs was given a full time gig, I think they would be a solid weekly starter for fantasy teams. However, Jackson has the largest share of this split, but without consistent touches in the passing game and/or goal line looks his ceiling is too low to start.
