Start Em / Sit Em - Week 2 - Sunday Games

By Brad Kruse

In this Start Em / Sit Em column each week, I'm looking to find some fringe players that you might consider starting each week and comment based on their matchups. Early on, I'll base my selection of candidates on where they were with respect to ADP. I'm not going to try to pad my stats by suggestin your start Drew Brees each week, but instead trying to dig deep and find some nuggets for players to avoid or to go after. These are coin flip guys and if I can finish the year at better than 60% I'll consider it a success. My metrics to get the start decision are: QB 20 pts or more, RB, WR or TE need to score 12 pts or more for a successful endorsement. Defense/Special Teams should put in 8 points or more to get those picks right. I'll look at ~4-6 players on each Thursday night's game and ~ 6 players for the rest of the week to get you going. Good Luck this year!

Player Pos Team Opp Start / Sit Comment
Niles Paul TE WAS JAC Start With Jordan Reed out, Niles Paul is the next man up to play the receiving TE role in Washington. He gets Jacksonville as an opponent this week. In 2013, JAC let up ~ 15ppg to the TE ranking 30th in the NFL. Against Philadelphia last week, JAC allowed Celek and Ertz to combine for 21.2 points. It looks like a sweet matchup for a team that utilizes the TE in the passing game.
Justin Hunter WR TEN DAL Start Dallas looks like a team you want to start all your players against. Justin Hunter should be in for a good day and has a solid chance at a TD.
Victor Cruz WR NYG ARI SIT The NY Giants look out of sync. Cruz is very difficult to trust at this point. Add to that the fact they're playing Arizona and could result in Cruz being matched up with Patrick Peterson and I'll conclude to avoid starting Cruz if you have reasonable options. He did complain about his targets last week and sometimes that helps a player get more attention from his QB the following week, but I don't think that trumps the negatives with the Giants at this point.
Pierre Thomas RB NOR CLE Start Thomas is in a 3 headed time share with Mark Ingram and Khiry Robinson. Thomas played the most snaps of the three last week and obviously benefits from the ppr bonus points. Cleveland allowed Leveon Bell to catch 8 passes out of the backfield. Look for that to be an indicator that Thomas should have a good chance for at least 4 catches to add to perhaps 5 rushing attempts and a possible TD. 5 runs for 25 yards and 4 catches for 40 yards plus a 1/3 chance at a TD projects to 12.5 points which projects him as startable.
Zac Stacy RB STL TB SIT Stacy is facing a strong headwind to open the year. The coach is looking to play the hot hand between he and Cunningham after Cunningham handily outperformed Stacy in the pre-season. Added to this factor, Bradford is out for the year and his backup, Shaun HIll, looks to be injured for week 2. Stacy thrived on volume last year. Without that same volume this year he's not a recommended start.
New York Jets D/ST D/ST NYJ GB SIT The Jets feasted on Oakland last week. This week they'll travel to Green Bay who will be focused on rebounding off their opening game loss to Seattle in Seattle. Don't expect GB to turn the ball over a lot and expect them to have some success putting points on the board. Look for another option at defense in Week 2.
