Observations, Thoughts& Other Tidbits From Week 1

By Chad Stapley

The combination of Jordy Nelson & Randall Cobb is going to give even the best of defensive team’s trouble. The duo combined to catch 15 passes for 141 yards and a TD, and that was against the Seattle defense. Look for these two to cause trouble all season.

Marshawn Lynch did what he is known for in running through nearly every Green Bay defender in is way. Lynch finished the night running the ball 20 times for 110 yards and two TDs.

St. Louis desperately needs a QB. I think you may see some trade rumors start swirling. Look for guys like Mark Sanches, Matt Barkley, Matt Schuab, & Matt Flynn to come up in rumors depending on how desperate the Rams get.

Is there anything that Cordarrelle Patterson can’t do? This week he ran the ball three times for 102 yards and a TD to go with his three receptions for 26 yards. Patterson is a game changer, he reminds me of how the Vikings used Percy Harvin when he was on their team.

It took Greg Jennings a year to get acclimated but he finally looked like he was a #1 WR on Sunday grabbing six passes for 58 yards and a TD.

The Rams need to find someone to throw the ball to Brian Quick, he has 7 catches for 99 yards in a game where he had two different QBs throwing to him.
The Browns all of a sudden have some pretty good depth at RB. To go along with FA acquisition Ben Tate, the Browns added two rooks in Terrance West & Isaiah Crowell who are able and eager to run the ball often. The rookie duo ran the ball 21 times for 132 yards and two TDs. These guys know how to play football the good old fashioned way.

LeVeon Bell showed everyone that he is ready to have a monster season. Bell ran the ball 21 times for 109 yards and a TD to go with his six receptions for 88 yards. If he puts up those type of number each week Bell will run away with the OPOY award.

Speaking of the Steelers; they have a young duo of WR’s in Markus Wheaton & Antonio Brown that are going to cause nightmares for everyone. Wheaton and Brown combined to catch 11 passes for 213 yards and a TD. Opposing defenses are going to have a tough time deciding who to double cover.

Allen Hurns is an undrafted WR out of the University of Miami and in about 15 minutes he put out notice to all NFL teams that they should defend him much better than the Eagles did. Hurns grabbed four receptions for 110 yards and two TDs. We will see if he was a one hit wonder or if he was just a huge miss for the other 31 NFL teams.

Zach Ertz is ready to take the next step and join some of the Elite TE’s in the NFL; he grabbed three passes for 77 yards and a TD. He can really stretch the field and cause mismatches with any LB that has the job of covering him.
Mark Ingram is playing to get paid this year. He ran the ball 13 times for 60 yards and two TDs. Ingram consistently dragged defenders along with him for a couple extra yards and always kept his legs moving. He looked every bit the part of #1 RB in the Saints offense on Sunday.

Someone needs to tell Brandin Cooks that he is a rookie because he looked like a season vet out there schooling the Falcons defenders. Cooks grabbed seven receptions for 77 yards and a TD.

Wow, Matt Ryan. That’s all that I really have to say. Ryan went 31/43 for 448 yards and 3 TD passes. Ryan looked like he was back in 2012 form. Ryan and the Falcons can make some serious noise if he puts up this type of production each week.

The Falcons WR core has got to be the best in the NFL. Julio Jones, Roddy White, Harry Douglas, & Devin Hester combined to catch 23 passes for 356 yards and a TD. There is going to be mismatches all over the place for opposing defenses because all of these WR can beat just about anyone in man coverage.
Derek Carr gets a C- rating. He had some plays where you thought wow this guy can be really good then he had those plays where you want him to do more and just throw the ball and not play it safe. I think once Carr knows the entire playbook and the Raiders actually get some decent WRs this could be a good QB for a long time.

I don’t think anyone can guard AJ Green; he caught six passes for 131 yards and a TD.

How old is Steve Smith? I don’t think it really matters because he still caught 7 passes for 118 yards and a TD in a losing effort.

Is this the year that Jake Locker finally puts all the injuries and hype behind him and actually plays a full good season? In week one he did outstanding connecting on 22/33 passes for 266 yards and two TDs.

I am sure Denver is sad to see Knowshon Moreno leave. Moreno led all Dolphin runners with 24 carries for 134 yards and one TD. Moreno is going to have a big year.

The Texans, 49ers, and Seattle defense are going to score some serious fantasy points if they keep producing the way they did in week one.

The Ravens have some serious RB issues. Not only did Ray Rice just get released for his domestic dispute ordeal but his backup Barnard Pierce did awful running the ball six times for just 14 yards. The Ravens need to add a RB and quick or they will be in for a long year.

That is not the way you justify a huge contract extension Alex Smith. Smith went 19/35 for 202 yards with one TD to three INTs. Smith was missing his #1 WR and Jamaal Charles running for 19 total yards did not help.

Ditto for Toby Gerhart who didn’t really do much in his first attempt at being #1 RB. Gerhart ran the ball 18 times for just 42 yards. That is not going to get you anything via fantasy value.

Geno Smith turned in an awful performance and somehow still got the win. Smith went 23/28 for 221 yards with a TD and an INT to go with two fumbles. This is not the type of production you want out of your starting QB in a very touch division.
