Quick Hits: Week 11

Kyle Orton was outplayed by Ryan Tannehill and the Dolphins beat the Bills soundly to take a nice lead over them in the wild card race. Orton has done enough to justify being the starter over EJ Manuel but he is still just a middle of the road QB not a franchise cornerstone. The Bills need to take a QB this year in the draft and there is a lot of good ones to choose from.

Jarvis Landry continues to impress in his rookie campaign. This week he added another five catches and a TD to his resume; Tannehill and Landry have developed a nice relationship thus far and it seems to get better each week.
Lamar Miller is having a breakout season right when he needed it the most. There was talk in this offseason that they could let Miller go because he had not lived up to expectations and they brought in Knowshon Moreno to be the starter but due to injuries Miller has played often. Miller had a great week running the ball 15 times for 86 yards proving he is a #1 RB.

Joique Bell had a great game running the ball rushing 14 times for 85 yards however the Lions continued to throw the ball 30 times even though Matthew Stafford was struggling mightily. The Lions have the defense to compete with anyone but there is no reason a backup QB like Drew Stanton should outplay a pro-bowler like Stafford; especially with the likes of Calvin Johnson & Golden Tate to throw to.

Speaking of Stanton; he threw for 300+ yards with two TDs and two INTs in a narrow victory over the Lions. Stanton has a solid defense behind him and has the talent to lead the Cardinals to a couple more victories.

The 49ers as a team ran the ball 37 times for 148 yards in a victory over the Giants; by running the ball that much and that effectively they were able to control the clock by having the ball for 35 minutes to the Giants 25 minutes. It also helps when your defense grabs five INTs from Eli Manning.

Frank Gore had another monster game running the ball 19 times for 95 yards proving that when they give him the ball consistently he can still churn off big yards.

Ruben Randle & Odell Beckham Jr. form a nice WR duo for the Giants if they could ever get consistent QB play from Manning they would be even more dangerous. In a narrow defeat to the 49ers they had 13 catches for 205 yards; these guys are going to be fun to watch.

On a day where Russell Wilson & Marshawn Lynch were playing out of their minds the Seahawks defense could not hold onto for the victory. Wilson went 20/32 with 172 yards and two TD passes to go with his 71 rushing yard and Lynch ran the ball 24 times for 124 yards.

Jamaal Charles is back; and that is a scary thought for opposing defenses. The defending super bowl champs could not contain Charles this week. Charles ran the ball 20 times for 159 yards and two TDs in a close victory over the Seahawks. Charles and Alex Smith are leading this team in the right direction.
In a game so close the Panthers really need to be able to rely on their run game more heavily; especially when it is known that Cam Newton is nursing some injuries. The Panthers as a team only ran the ball 25 times to 37 passing attempts in a two point loss to the very bad Falcons. Newton didn’t do awful when he was throwing the ball they just don’t have any stand out WRs outside of Kelvin Benjamin.

Speaking of the rookie sensation Benjamin, this week he caught nine passes for 109 yards and a TD proving that he needs to be in discussion for the best rookie WR for this year.

If Matt Ryan could ever get some help from his rushing attack the Falcons could have a scary offense. They have some serious depth at WR; Ryan completed 31 passes to nine different WRs. That shows that Ryan has a lot of faith in all of his receiving staff and they are a dangerous group.

Andy Dalton played an almost flawless game when he needed it the most; Dalton went 16/22 for 220 yards with three TDs and no turnovers.

Jeremy Hill is a rookie RB out of LSU that continues to impress while playing for the injured Bengals starter at RB. Hill ran the ball 27 times for 152 yards proving that he can carry the load as an every down RB.

AJ Green is one of the best WR in the NFL when healthy; this week he grabbed six passes for 127 yards and a TD.

Drew Brees had a really good game in a closer than the score showed loss to the Bengals. Brees completed 33 passes to nine different WRs throwing for over 250 yards and a TD. Brees has the offense to compete with anyone but the defense that couldn’t stop a nose bleed.

I really don’t know what to think of the fact that RGIII was severely outplayed by Josh McCown. RGIII looks like he is trying to do too much and it is costing the Redskins big time. McCown looked like he knew exactly when and where to throw the ball as he dissected the Redskins defense the entire game.

Mike Evans is a stud. This week Evans caught seven passes for 209 yards and two TD passes proving that he is already pro-bowl worthy in the NFL.

Denver laid an EGG this week and a lot of the blame can be put on Peyton Manning for throwing to costly INTs. Manning could not get it done against the Rams defense in the red-zone.

Demaryius Thomas & Emmanuel Sanders continue to be the best WR duo in the NFL; even in a lost they put up huge numbers and make their team competitive each play. The duo combined to catch 12 passes for 205 yards and a TD.

Tre Mason finally proved to be worthy of that third round draft pick the Rams spent on him. Mason ran the ball 29 times for 113 yards against an otherwise stout Denver run defense.

Kenny Britt is a WR to watch as the season continues; with all the QB change with the Rams different WRs are going to have better relationships with different QBs. Britt and Shaun Hill seem to have a good connection as Britt caught four passes for 128 yards and a TD. I would watch how he and Hill perform together for the next week or so.

If I were the Bears offensive coordinator I would find a way to get the ball to Matt Forte even more than they already give him. Forte has been unstoppable this year and he is proving that he is one of the best all-around RBs in the NFL. Forte had 32 touches for 175 yards proving to be a factor in the rushing and passing attack.

The Bears have a deadly WR duo themselves in Alshon Jeffery & Brandon Marshall. The duo caught 18 passes for 225 yard and three TDs in a close victory over the Vikings.

The Vikings need to figure out how to get Jerick McKinnon the ball as much as possible. He has a very similar playing style to Matt Forte and he might be a little bit more athletic. This week McKinnon had 12 touches for 58 yards; given more of an opportunity he could do some serious damage.

In the battle of the former Tom Brady backups; Ryan Mallet outplayed Brian Hoyer. Mallet went 20/30 for 211 yards with two TDs and one INT and Hoyer went 20/50 for 330 yards with one TD and one INT. Mallet has a lot of upside and I think he could be a match made in heaven for the Texans.

What is going on with these rookie RBs out of LSU that are just having monster games. Alfred Blue the rookie 6th round draft pick from LSU ran the ball 36 times for 156 yards looking more like a 1st round draft pick than a 6th rounder. Blue has had some monster games when given playing time this year.
Ryan Matthews looked good running the ball 16 times for 70 yards in his first playing time in over a month. Matthews looks like he is healthy and ready to return to his every down RB duties.

Aaron Rodgers is playing at an all-star level and I don’t think anyone has the receiving core that he has to throw to which is an added benefit. This week Rodgers threw for 300+ yards with three TDs and no turnovers.

Randall Cobb & Jordy Nelson continue to embarrass opposing NFL teams combining for 15 catches for 238 yards and a TD in a 33 point beat down over the Eagles.
The rookie WR, Jordan Matthews, for the Eagles had another huge game catching five passes for 107 yards for a TD. Matthews continues to get better each week.
Who in the world is Jonas Gray? Gray is an undrafted rookie RB out of Notre Dame who absolutely caught the world by surprise in shredding the Colts defense for 38 rushes for 199 yards and four TDs in his first significant game action. If Gray can run like that each week that makes the Patriots offense even scarier if that is possible.

Andrew Luck needs some help from his offensive line and his RBs. The Colts RBs ran the ball 17 times for 19 yards. That is awful. Luck on the other hand threw for over 300 yards with two TDs and an INT.

LeVeon Bell is playing like the MVP right now. This week he ran the ball 33 times for 204 yards in a closer than it should have been victory over the Titans. Bell is running the ball with poise and precision and is really waiting for his offensive line to make the correct blocks. Bell has been an unstoppable force this year thus far.

Antonio Brown added another nine catches for 91 yards and a TD to his resume, proving to be one of the better WR in the NFL each week.

Zach Mettenberger continues to impress as he has taken over the starting QB role for the Titans. He is not only making the Titans more competitive but he is a clear upgrade over anyone they have on their roster. This week he threw for 261 yards with two TDs and one INT.
