Post NFL Draft Throughts

The following is a look back at this past weekend’s NFL Draft. We will discuss the best drafts, the biggest sleepers, and how the rich got richer in a pure fantasy aspect.

Best Overall Draft

Jacksonville Jaguars TIE Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Blake Bortles QB Mike Evans WR
Marqise Lee WR Austin Seferian-Jenkins TE
Allen Robinson WR Charles Sims RB
Storm Johnson RB Robert Herron WR

The Jaguars not only got their franchise QB but they also got two potentially all-pro WR to develop with Bortles. Personally I think the Jaguars set Bortles up for success with the addition of Lee and Robinson to go with Cecil Shorts and Justin Blackmon (if he ever suits up for the Jags again). The addition of Toby Gerhart in the offseason was a nice addition but I think you will see Storm Johnson push him for carries if he doesn’t provide the needed spike in the running game the Jags so desperately need.

The Buccaneers nailed it with this draft. Their uncertainty at the QB position leads me to think that the Jaguar players could potentially have more fantasy value. The Buccaneers have named Josh McCown their starting QB but have also said that Mike Glennon is their QB of the future. That’s all fine and dandy if you had just drafted Glennon and he hadn’t played any significant snaps. Glennon played quite a bit last year and I think he outplayed what many people expected out of him with a sub-par coach. Insert Lovie Smith and I really think Glennon could shine, if you didn’t already ruin his confidence but announcing a newly acquired journey man QB your starter. Evans is going to be a star especially lining up across the field from Vincent Jackson, which was an amazing acquisition for the Bucs. Jenkins is considered by some the best TE in this draft, and Sims has got his fair share of accolades. Sims could actually make Doug Martin a better RB by pushing him for playing time. Herron is a nice addition at the slot WR and I can see him making an instant impact.

Sleeper Drafts

NY Jets
The Jets did a pretty good job of drafting for team needs for the immediate future and the upcoming years of development for Geno Smith. They got the most NFL ready TE in Jace Amaro, who I think could potentially have the most impressive pro career in the long run. Shaq Evans is a nice possession WR to pair with Eric Decker who was recently acquired. Evans could end up being one of the sleeper picks of this draft, he reminds me a lot of Jermaine Kearse who plays for the Seahawks, a hard working nitty-gritty WR. Then there is the addition of Tahj Boyd at QB who could potentially push Smith or Vick to play in the long run. This could turn out to be a talented draft class.

Green Bay Packers
The Packers already have close to the most dangerous offense in the NFL when Aaron Rodgers and Co. are healthy. Then they go out and add three potential studs to their roster via the draft and the teams in the NFC North should be worried. Don’t worry about who is going to defend Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb, and Jarrett Boykins (whom I think is on the cusp of a break out year), but by adding Davante Adams, Jared Abbrederis, and Richard Rodgers in the draft you are creating even more nightmare problems. Rodgers could be a sneaky little piece to the Packer offense, he reminds me of Jermichael Finley, the former Packers TE. I think Rodgers has the athleticism to stretch the field and creates nightmares with LB in pass defense. He needs to get bigger and stronger because as of now he is really only a pass catcher and does not offer much in the terms of blocking.

Houston Texans
Obviously the pairing Jadeveon Clowney with JJ Watt is going to be a nightmare and Clowney will most likely get his fair share of sacks just because he will play opposite of Watt. That means Clowney will be a hot commodity in fantasy leagues where you draft a D-Line player. Then you have the three picks that could pay major dividends in the long run. Tom Savage is going to be a good QB in the NFL. He has played extremely well in his two years of college football which were oddly enough split up by about 1000 days. Savage played as a frosh for the Rutgers and was a Freshman All American, then he transferred to Arizona and Pitt respectively. He finally won the starting job at Pitt (after sitting out due to the transfer rules) and he really turned Pitt into a winning team even though they didn’t have much to offer offensively. Alfred Blue is a nice little sleeper RB pick, he may have been the best overall RB on LSU depth chart but for whatever reason was limited on carries. Blue had eligibility remaining and I think he would have eventually won the starting RB role for LSU.

The Rich Got Richer

Seattle Seahawks
The Seahawks lost Golden Tate, and they drafted to WR who could potentially replace him quite easily. Seattle not only added Paul Richardson the speedster from Colorado (whom was rated a top 5 WR on some draft boards) and they got Kevin Norwood from Alabama. Norwood is 6’2 and Richardson is 6’1. What do they bring to the table? Norwood averaged 15 YPC last year to go along with 7 TD receptions against fierce SEC defenses. Richardson topped him in both categories for an awful Pac-12 team, he caught 10 TDs last year and he averaged 16.1 YPC. Can you see what the Seahawks are going for? Percy Harvin, big play type of WR, and now you add two of college football’s best from 2013 in that category. It no wonder the 49ers drafted 12 corner backs.

San Francisco 49ers
The 49ers are clearly not going to change their offensive game plan. They drafted the best center in the draft in Marcus Martin, who could start from day one. Then they drafted the best RB in the draft (maybe even better than any of the RBs taken last year) in Carlos Hyde. The 49ers want to run the ball right down your throat and they have the O-Line and RBs to do it. I see a lot of Frank Gore in Hyde, so whom better to mentor Hyde in his early years than anyone but Gore himself. They also nabbed Bruce Ellington at WR who some mocks had him sneaking into the 1st round or early 2nd round. The 49ers were patient and got Ellington in the 4th round. Ellington may take a few years of seasoning as he was a 2 sport star at South Carolina and he has never solely focused on football. Then just to put an explanation point on what the future of the 49ers offense has in store they draft the best FB in college football in Trey Millard. Millard would have most likely gone in the 3rd-4th round range had he not gotten injured. Millard is a nasty in your face FB who will clear the path for Hyde for many years to come.
