How to Make the NFC West Even Better Via the 2014 NFL Draft

The NFC West quickly became the most dominate division in the NFL this past season from top to bottom and they have the win percentage as a division to prove it. The chart below shows the win-loss breakdown for each division and the winning percentage for the division as a whole.

AFC East           AFC North                  AFC South                  AFC West

34 – 30                31 – 33                         24 – 40                         37 – 27

53%                    48%                              38%                              58%

NFC East           NFC North                  NFC South                  NFC West

28 – 36                28 – 36                         31 – 33                         42 – 22

44%                    44%                              48%                              66%

Only three divisions as a whole had a winning percentage above .500, which is breaking even on the year. The NFC West wins at an 8% higher clip than the next closet division in the AFC West. So the question looms, how do you make the best division in the NFL even better? Next, we are going to break down the biggest offensive need for each team in the NFC West and who they should draft to fill in the hole immediately.

Arizona Cardinals

NEED: A #1 RB to help lighten the load for Andre Ellington which will help develop him into an even more elite weapon for Carson Palmer.

Who They Need: The Cardinals do not need to reach high in the draft in order to get a good RB; this draft is loaded with capable RBs that can carry quite the load. The Cardinals already have a pretty decent O-Line that only got bolstered with the recent FA signing of Jared Veldheer. I like either Andre Williams out of Boston College or Jeremy Hill out of LSU. Both had pretty solid O-Lines in college and both proved that they could handle the heavy running load over the past two years. Hill didn’t have quite as many attempts because he played for a far more athletic and prominent team so his touches were limited. Williams was pretty much all Boston College had going for them and he still produced at a high level. Here is the stat lines for the two over the past two years:

Hill                  345 rushes-2,156 yards-28 TDs- 6.25YPC avg

Williams          485 rushes-2,761 yards- 22 TDs- 5.69YPC avg.

Either RB you pick would pair nicely with Ellington and what the Cardinals already have. I prefer Hill because he has played against a higher level of competition and he has less tread on the tires.

San Francisco 49ers

NEED: Either a #3 WR who can break plays over the middle and beat guys straight down the field.

Who They Need: The 49ers have the luxury of pretty much drafting whoever they want towards the end of the round 1. Or the 49ers who have an astounding amount of draft picks can trade a couple of their 3rd and 4th round picks to move up in the 1st round to get a guy like Sammy Watkins out of Clemson, Marquise Lee out of USC, or Mike Evans out of Texas A&M. Or they can stand pat and get a guy like Brandin Cooks or Josh Huff later in the draft; both guys Harbaugh is very familiar with from his Pac-12 Days. I say they trade up and go for either Watkins or Evans; could you imagine Kaepernick throwing to the likes of Crabtree, Davis, Boldin, and one of those two young guys? NFC West beware if that happens.

Seattle Seahawks

NEED: A true #1 WR.

Who They Need: The Seahawks much like the 49ers do not have many holes in their roster and they can treat their 1st round pick as a luxury choice. I see the Seahawks waiting back with their pick and choosing from either LSU WR; Odell Beckham Jr. or Jarvis Landry. Whomever Peter Carol falls in love with I can see being their 1st round pick. An odd ball pick could be Jace Amaro the extremely athletic TE out of Texas Tech; could you imagine him lining up all over the field with Harvin throwing defenses off completely?

St. Louis Rams

NEED: A speedy #2 RB that can break big runs off the edge and who can catch the ball and make things happen in the open field.

Who They Need: The Rams found out they got a steal in Zac Stacy in the 5th round of last year’s draft and they may look to stick with that draft plan and draft a RB later in the draft especially with all the 1st round RB draft busts as of lately. I like Kadeem Carey or Dri Archer for the Rams. Carey seems to be more of a sure shot with back to back All-American worth campaigns at Arizona. Archer is a wild card; athletically he is as gifted as any NFL player but he is so small that his NFL career could prove to be a short one. Archer was not even the #1 RB at Kent State so that could raise some questions. Then again the Rams do not really need Archer to come in right away and perform from Day 1.
