Target and Snap Analysis Week 3

With each passing week more and more data is created on the football field. As we import this data into our various stats pages, you as fantasy football players can use this data to your advantage to explore trends, opportunities, or any other edge you can find within the statistics to help with your decisions. Using our Snap Counts tool and Target Red Zone tool, there are many takeaways from Week 2 that can help forecast things to come in Week 3. - Through two weeks, Mike Evans is the current target leader with 24 looks in his direction. His 11 receptions put him at a 46% completion rate, which does not exactly tell the whole story, meaning regression is coming. Fantasy Football’s WR9 faces the L.A. Rams this week, who he torched for 157 receiving yards on nine receptions in their 2015 matchup.
- Below is a table of the New York Giants receiving corps. All three have played on at least 92% of the teams’ snaps. Through two weeks, Sterling Shepard is the receiver to own in New York. Odell Beckham, who can expect a heavy dose of Josh Norman this weekend, has been held out of the end zone thus far in 2016.
- Jason Witten and Jesse James remain as the two non-QBs on the field for 100% of their teams’ snaps. Witten has five red zone targets to James’ three, however all three of James’ are from the ten zone. James, the current TE15, faces the Eagles this weekend, who have allowed a league-low 33 total yard to tight ends this season.
- Using double-digit targets as a base, Travis Benjamin and Quincy Enunwa are the most efficient receivers in fantasy football. Both have 13 receptions on 14 targets. Enunwa has 146 receiving yards and a score while Benjamin 147 receiving yards and two scores. After losing Keenan Allen for the season in Week 1, the Chargers lost Danny Woodhead last week. The Jets are dealing with a hobbled Brandon Marshall. Week 3 will present an even more opportunity for these already-efficient receivers.
- Stefon Diggs’ 285 receiving yards lead all receivers. His 50 PPR points makes him the WR1 in fantasy football, a title he shares with Kelvin Benjamin.
- Players of note without a receiving touchdown going into Week 3: Amari Cooper, Alshon Jeffery, Jarvis Landry, Odell Beckham, Julian Edelman, Allen Robinson, Allen Hurns, Dez Bryant, Demaryius Thomas, and Randall Cobb.
- All players with multiple receiving touchdowns going into Week 3: Kelvin Benjamin, Larry Fitzgerald, Mike Wallace, Brandin Cooks, Corey Coleman, Julio Jones, Mike Evans, DeNadre Hopkins, Antonio Brown, Eric Decker, Travis Benjamin, Jordy Nelson, and…DeMarco Murray.
- Greg Olsen leads all tight ends with 17 targets and is the TE1 with 37 points. The TE2 is Jacob Tamme, who has 11 receptions on 16 targets for 195 yards and a score. Rob Gronkowski may or may not play this week, the Panthers are without their starting running back, and the Falcons face the worst defense in football in a Monday night showdown against the New Orleans Saints. Olsen and Tamme have a chance to further the gap between themselves and Gronk, if he even suits up this week.
- There is one receiver in football who can account for 1/3 of his teams’ targets and that is Jordan Matthews. Jarvis Landry and Tavon Austin are right behind him with a 32% target share.
- The Chicago Bears’ 56 total snaps are the fewest in football through two weeks. Brian Hoyer is expected to be the quarterback for the foreseeable future. His success with Josh Gordon and DeAndre Hopkins should have you lifting your finger from the panic button on Alshon Jeffrey.
- 2015’s fantasy football offensive juggernaut, the Carolina Panthers, lead the league in snaps with 156. The temporary loss of Jonathan Stewart should equate to more passing. Cam Newton (QB1), Kelvin Benjamin (WR1), and Greg Olsen (TE1) are all the scoring leaders in their respective position.
My favorite day of the week is Tuesday morning, when all of the stats on FootballDiehards.com are updated. I combine data from both of the stats pages listed above and make observations that may help me draw some conclusions, find value in opportunity, and forecast what trends may or may not continue the following week.
