(10/24 11:43 AM PT)
The Facts:
Garrard could be sidelined up to a month with a badly sprained left ankle. HC Jack Del Rio said Wednesday that Garrard has a high ankle sprain, meaning he has ligament damage, and will sit out road games against Tampa Bay and New Orleans. "It's more likely to be three or four (games), somewhere in that window," Del Rio said. "I don't think it's likely to think he'll be back any sooner than that."
Diehards Line:
Del Rio said Quinn Gray will make his first career start against the Buccaneers on Sunday. Gray struggled in his second extensive playing stint in the last two seasons. He finished 9-of-24 for 56 yards, with two interceptions and a fumble. ... The Jaguars also planned to work out Doug Johnson, Drew Henson and Todd Bouman later Wednesday. Drew Bledsoe was approached about a tryout but declined to come out of retirement.

(10/24 9:48 AM PT)
The Facts:
HC Eric Mangini announced this morning that Pennington is the starting quarterback this weekend.
Diehards Line:
Following his evaluation during the last two days, Mangini said he liked Pennington's decision-making as well as his play-making, pointing to his 5-yard scramble on third-and-5 ("Classic Chad," he said) and the Jets' final TD and 2-point conversion with no time remaining. Mangini said it was tempting to not make an announcement -- "very tempting" -- but he wanted to "move forward and get this issue behind us." At least for a couple of days.

(10/24 9:29 AM PT)
The Facts:
Leftwich underwent surgery on his severely-sprained right ankle on Tuesday, in a procedure that may enable him to return to the field within two weeks, according to team sources.
Diehards Line:
Leftwich was to have the ankle secured by at least two screws. It is a procedure that has had a high rate of success of return for athletes, a team source said. ... Joey Harrington will start at quarterback for the Falcons this Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers.

class="headline" onClick="expanddiv('tr4')" style="cursor:hand; cursor:pointer" onmouseover="window.status=' ';return true">Colts Heading Back To 2-RB Rotation?
(10/24 9:24 AM PT)
The Facts:
Joseph Addai ran 16 times for 85 yards Monday night. Backup Kenton Keith carried 15 times for 56 yards. They were an effective pair, one Colts fans can expect to see frequently in the future. "Kenton's played well and we want to get him in there," HC Tony Dungy said Tuesday. "I think we're developing more and more confidence in him.
Diehards Line:
Dungy added: "Joseph missing the week before may have had a little something to do with it but more and more I think having those guys go and keeping those guys fresh is going to be good for our running game." Addai had missed the Colts' previous game with a bruised chest. Owners shouldn't hit the panic button -- it's not time to move Joseph Addai; he was effective enough working in a rotation last year and it's too soon to jump to the conclusion his value will diminish signficantly based on Dungy's comment.

class="headline" onClick="expanddiv('tr5')" style="cursor:hand; cursor:pointer" onmouseover="window.status=' ';return true">Rudi Johnson Held Out Wednesday
(10/24 9:17 AM PT)
The Facts:
Johnson (hamstring) was not on the field for Wednesday's practice.
Diehards Line:
Although it's only the first session of the week, Johnson's recent inability to either practice or play is an ongoing concern. Of greater concern might be Kenny Watson's strong showing in Johnson's absence. At the very least, Watson is carving out a contributing role even after Johnson is healthy; at worst (from the perspective of Johnson owners), Watson is making it very easy for the team to take a cautious approach with Rudi's return.

class="headline" onClick="expanddiv('tr6')" style="cursor:hand; cursor:pointer" onmouseover="window.status=' ';return true">Chris Henry Cleared To Practice; Reinstatement Pending
(10/24 9:12 AM PT)
The Facts:
Henry, serving an eight-game suspension for violation of NFL policies, has been cleared to return to the practice field. Henry practiced with the Bengals on Wednesday after the NFL informed the team that he could resume on-field activities in preparation for a possible return to the active roster.
Diehards Line:
Henry's suspension ends after Cincinnati plays its eighth game at Buffalo on November 4. Henry tied for the team lead with nine touchdown catches last season, making 36 receptions for 605 yards. As a rookie in 2005, Henry caught 31 passes for 422 yards and six TDs.

class="headline" onClick="expanddiv('tr7')" style="cursor:hand; cursor:pointer" onmouseover="window.status=' ';return true">Marcus Pollard To Have Knee Scoped
(10/24 12:24 AM PT)
The Facts:
Pollard, who missed last Sunday's game with a sore right knee, is expected to undergo arthroscopic surgery and will likely miss the Seahawks' next game, Nov. 4 at Cleveland.
Diehards Line:
"He felt he was almost hurting the team because he could not do the things he was used to doing," HC Mike Holmgren said. "It may be just arthritis. You know, Marcus has played a long time. ..." Will Heller will fill in as needed.

class="headline" onClick="expanddiv('tr8')" style="cursor:hand; cursor:pointer" onmouseover="window.status=' ';return true">Bucs Release FB Zack Crockett
(10/23 10:25 PM PT)
The Facts:
Crockett was released Tuesday, less than two weeks after joining the Bucs.
Diehards Line:
The Bucs promoted receiver Chad Lucas from the practice squad to the active roster to augment their depleted corps of wideouts. Also, the Bucs are expected to announce the addition of running back/fullback Byron Storer, who will take the place of Crockett. The Bucs also added receiver Derrick Hamilton to the practice squad to round out their moves.

class="headline" onClick="expanddiv('tr9')" style="cursor:hand; cursor:pointer" onmouseover="window.status=' ';return true">All Signs Point Towards Steven Jackson's Return
(10/23 4:10 PM PT)
The Facts:
Jackson, who has missed four games with a groin injury, is expected to return for Sunday's contest against the Cleveland, according to a report on the team's web site. "I think there's a good chance (he'll play)," HC Scott Linehan said. "My feeling is not 100 percent, but it's close enough where it looked like he had the burst he needs to have, and the confidence based on practice here in the last week that he's got is a good sign."
Diehards Line:
Jackson, the NFL's fifth-leading rusher last season, has not played since suffering a groin tear on September 23 against the Buccaneers. ... The Rams' offense has sputtered badly without Jackson, failing to reach double figures in four of the last five games. St. Louis has not scored a touchdown in last eight quarters.

class="headline" onClick="expanddiv('tr10')" style="cursor:hand; cursor:pointer" onmouseover="window.status=' ';return true">Trent Edwards Will Start Week 8
(10/23 2:40 PM PT)
The Facts:
HC Dick Jauron has elected to start Edwards again this week against the Jets. It also sounds as if the Edwards will hold onto the role beyond this Sunday's game. "We are naming Trent Edwards as our starting quarterback," said Jauron in a statement Tuesday. "I have spoken with both Trent and J.P. Losman and want to get the word out to our fans."
Diehards Line:
It will be Edwards' fourth straight start and fifth appearance after he played virtually the entire game at New England following Losman's knee injury. It will be his first start on the road. In his three career starts Edwards has completed 70 percent of his passes while throwing for 563 yards and one touchdown against three interceptions for a passer rating of 78.3. ... Look for more on this situation in Wednesday's Team Notes (the link will appear in this section of the site when available).
