The fantasy season is less than two weeks away and drafts are in full swing. In my opinion, participating in several mock drafts and researching various expert rankings is the key to a successful season. I have been through a couple of drafts that count (with a dollar or two on the line for sure) and there have been some bizarre things going on for sure.
The biggest issue I think that goes on in most drafts is that so many novice players pick up a magazine or read websites like Football Diehards and reach for sleepers or players on the move. Just because an expert may like someone as a sleeper, you need to get your core players first protecting against a sleeper not being anything more than a snoozer.
Most experts will concentrate on the debate on the top few players at each position, focusing on the first round. Missing in the first round on a player is a crusher – very hard to recover from a first round mistake.
One way to help your season recover from a first round bust or top tier injury is a quality second tier guy. Not a sleeper, but hitting a home run with a second tier player, because there are a lot of them. I thought to myself – who are my favorite second tier guys? I focused my attention on a guy at each position I would most want on my team at backup quarterback, number two running back, No. 3 wide receiver and backup tight end. These players would easily be able to step into my lineup, or could possibly vault up to top tier with quality seasons.
QB – Matt Schaub, Houston Texans. I really feel this is Schaub’s year. Everyone stays away from Houston because of their annual poor record, lack of running back, and poor offensive line. I love Schaub this year because of his targets Andre Johnson and Owen Daniels. Schaub is reportedly as healthy as ever and if he can stay upright, I expect over 3,000 yards passing and 20+ touchdowns for the Texan QB.
RB – Thomas Jones, New York Jets. I wrote on my blog on WCOFF.com that I love Thomas Jones. So many experts have him in the mid 20’s for a RB ranking – I think he will be in the mid teens by the end of the season. Let’s be honest, Jones was not good last year. He hit the 1,000 yard mark but barely found the end zone. This year the Jets spent huge dollars on an offensive line and, you may have heard, found a quarterback in Brett Favre. The Favre signing is the key for Jones’ rise on my list because he now makes a defense prepare for the passing game. Chad Pennington did not provide a downfield threat and defenses could key on Jones. I expect 1,200 rushing yards and 9-12 TD this season.
WR – Bryant Johnson, San Francisco 49ers. Let me just say this – I love Bryant Johnson this year. I think he will be a number one receiver for San Francisco in Mike Martz offense. That is a wonderful thing for fantasy owners. Johnson is not very well known because he was behind Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin. Now he gets out and is one of the main targets in San Fran, along side Isaac Bruce and Arnaz Battle. Johnson has great hands and big time speed. I actually think that he could be good enough to be a WR2 – bump him up your list and enjoy your new found fantasy toy.
TE – Randy McMichael, St. Louis Rams. The Rams and their offense were absolutely terrible last year. McMichael was brought in to be a big time offensive target, but with the countless injuries to the offensive line, was forced to be a blocking tight end. This year brings new hope with a healthy offensive line and a new offense in Al Saunders. I am going to predict 700-800 yards receiving and 6-8 touchdowns, which would be at or above his career highs. Saunders loves the tight end and McMichael has been a favorite Marc Bulger target in the preseason.

(8/25 12:15 AM PT)
The Facts:
After Saturday night's 24-10 loss to the Rams, HC John Harbaugh provided another one. he left open the possibility that rookie first-round pick Flacco could jump back into contention for a starting job that seemed to be between Troy Smith and Kyle Boller.
Diehards Line:
Rushed into his first start Saturday, Flacco completed 18 of 37 passes for 152 yards and a touchdown. Asked whether the competition might now include three quarterbacks instead of two, Harbaugh said: "We'll see. That's a fair question. I just don't know the answer." While other NFL teams have cleared up their quarterback battles, the Ravens' remains unresolved just 14 days before the Sept. 7 season opener against the Bengals.

(8/24 5:40 PM PT)
The Facts:
According to NFL Network insider Adam Schefter, Sorgi is being held out of tonight's game against the Bills due to a sore knee.
Diehards Line:
Per Schefter, Sorgi is bothered by some stiffness in the knee and given Peyton Manning's uncertain status (owner Jim Irsay told Schefter before tonight's game he expected Manning to be ready Week 1 -- but wouldn't guarantee it) it would appear the team is playing it safe. Jared Lorenzen started in Sorgi's place.

(8/24 4:25 PM PT)
The Facts:
Ryan will open the regular season as the Falcons' starting quarterback. The decision was made over the weekend and was announced by HC Mike Smith this afternoon. "We have evaluated Matt through OTAs, mini-camp, training camp and over the course of three preseason games," Smith said. "After reviewing Matt’s progress, we feel like he has won the starting job."
Diehards Line:
Ryan will make his regular-season debut Sept. 7 against Detroit at the Georgia Dome. The last rookie quarterback to start the regular season was Houston's David Carr in 2002. Carr went 4-12, getting sacked a whopping 76 times. Ryan won an open competition over veterans Chris Redman, Joey Harrington and D.J. Shockley. ... Given the options and the circumstances, this seems like a wise move. Ryan has been praised by teammates for his leadership, diligence and huddle presence as well as his ability to make plays.

(8/24 4:20 PM PT)
The Facts:
The Falcons on Sunday signed Marcus Pollard, four days after the veteran tight end was released by the New England Patriots. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Also on Sunday, the Falcons waived tight end George Cooper.
Diehards Line:
The 6-3, 255-pound Pollard is entering his 14th season and has 349 career receptions for 4,280 yards and 40 touchdowns. Last season, Pollard appeared in 14 games with the Seattle Seahawks and recorded 28 catches for 273 yards.

(8/24 12:59 PM PT)
The Facts:
As expected, the Falcons will name Ryan the starter for the 2008 season. Per Adam Schefter of NFL Network, the announcement is coming on Sunday.
Diehards Line:
Ryan, the third overall pick in the 2008 draft, beat out Chris Redman and Joey Harrington for the job. As PFT's Mike Florio suggested, the Falcons need to go with Ryan, because the other options were Redman and Harrington. And Florio added: "The Falcons need to justify the huge money being paid to Ryan. And the Falcons are desperate to wipe the Mike Vick stain off the franchise. ..." All true. Also true is the fact that Ryan has played reasonably well, completing 32 of 52 passes for 277 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception in three preseason games.

(8/24 11:11 AM PT)
The Facts:
The Bengals say Palmer is questionable for Thursday night's pre-season finale after undergoing a brief procedure to treat a small crack in his nose but is still set to start the regular-season opener in Baltimore.
Diehards Line:
"Carson is feeling fine," said HC Marvin Lewis in a news release that characterized procedure as taking less than 10 minutes. "He suffered a small crack in one of the nose bones. The bone was gently put back into place under local anesthetic. ..." Palmer suffered the injury late in the first half while getting sacked by defensive end Bobby McCray and safety Kevin Kaesviharn during the Saints' 13-0 victory at Paul Brown Stadium Saturday night.

class="headline" onClick="expanddiv('tr7')" style="cursor:hand; cursor:pointer" onmouseover="window.status=' ';return true">Report: Cardinals To Name Kurt Warner Their Starter
(8/24 9:44 AM PT)
The Facts:
The Cardinals are expected to name Warner as their starting quarterback, a team source told ESPN's Chris Mortensen on Sunday.
Diehards Line:
Matt Leinart's poor performance Saturday night against the Raiders probably sealed the decision. Leinart had three interceptions in the first half and completed just 4 of 12 passes for 24 yards. His passer rating was 2.8. The Cardinals won the game 24-0. The source told Mortensen that Leinart's training-camp performance has been uneven, and the Cardinals are concerned about his arm strength and consistency. ... You'll want to watch for an official announcement, but a change would back the summer-long trend.

(8/24 9:43 AM PT)
The Facts:
The Saints also had new injury issues Saturday night with two other starters: Colston and running back Reggie Bush. Colston left the game after an incomplete pass on third down of the Saints' first drive. Payton said Colston had bruised ribs but X-rays were negative.
Diehards Line:
Bush left the game late in the first quarter. He had two carries for six yards. Bush said he was hit in the thigh during a punt return. It was the first time he returned punts in the preseason. "I could have kept playing, but it didn't seem important to go back in and risk further injury," said Bush, who ran one yard on his first punt return and 13 on his second.

class="headline" onClick="expanddiv('tr9')" style="cursor:hand; cursor:pointer" onmouseover="window.status=' ';return true">Whisenhunt Not Ready To Bail On Matt Leinart... Yet
(8/24 8:20 AM PT)
The Facts:
Leinart had three interceptions in the first half Saturday night's win over Oakland and completed just 4 of 12 passes for 24 yards. His passer rating was 2.8, which wouldn't even be a good GPA. HC Ken Whisenhunt deferred opinions on the matter until he reviews game video but didn't sound like he was close to making a change. "This is a process," he said. "This is part of the process, how Matt handles this and how he responds to this. You are not going to play great every week. We understand that."
Diehards Line:
Still, as Republic staffer Ken Somers reminded reader this morning, "In coaching, there's an axiom that has been around since the whistle was invented: Don't make decisions until you have to, because sometimes they are made for you." That could be the case with the Cardinals' quarterback situation. "I know Matt's down," Whisenhunt said, "but I'm not worried about Matt's confidence, because I think this competition, being pushed by Kurt [Warner], has made him mentally tougher." As Profootballtalk.com's Mike Florio suggested: "If by 'tougher' Whisenhunt means 'not a better quarterback,' then we agree." The situation bears watching.

(8/23 10:44 PM PT)
The Facts:
Carter and FB Oren O'Neal sustained left knee injuries in the opening minutes of Saturday night's game against the Arizona Cardinals and likely are out for the season. HC Lane Kiffin said Carter sustained a torn anterior cruciate ligament. The extent of O'Neal's injury isn't as clear. "Maybe it's just a sprain," O'Neal said afterward.
Diehards Line:
Kiffin didn't sound as optimistic, saying the expected loss of O'Neal, a key blocker and special teams player, is "a big deal. ..." O'Neal was hurt on the opening kickoff. Carter was hurt four plays later at the end of a 7-yard reception. Carter was being considered, along with Ronald Curry, for a starting spot opposite Javon Walker. "We lost two significant parts of what our offense hoped to be," Kiffin said. ... Carter's absence means more playing time for Curry.
