SEATTLE SEAHAWKS UPDATE

lSEAHAWKS FIRE JIM MORA; USC'S CARROLL NEXT IN SEATTLE?

As FOXSports.com's Jay Glazer first reported this morning, the Seahawks have fired head coach Jim Mora after after Seattle went 5-11 in his first season after taking over from Mike Holmgren.

KJR-AM in Seattle says it received a text message from Mora confirming he was fired.

As the Associated Press suggested, it’s a stunning reversal from last month when team CEO Tod Leiweke gave Mora a vote of confidence. Mora himself said this week that he expected to return in 2010, despite Seattle losing its final four games.

Worth noting, however: Seattle failed to score more than 13 points in any game during that four-game skid, losing by a combined 123-37.

According to Glazer, Seattle has already called for permission to interview other assistants. Likely candidates include Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier, among others.

ESPN's Adam Schefter tossed Bill Cowher's name into the mix as a candidate likely to be contacted. Whether the former Steelers coach and current CBS analyst has any interest in the job is unknown.

But Schefter's ESPN colleague, Chris Mortensen, is reporting the Seahawks will target current UCS head coach Pete Carroll, who is interested in the job. ...

Mora, 48, previously coached the Atlanta Falcons from 2004-2006 and led them to an 11-5 record and the NFC championship game in his first season. He was an assistant head coach with the Seahawks from 2007-2008 before taking over the head job.
