The Facts: Apparently sensitive to the perception that they are recklessly throwing millions of dollars at undeserving free agents, Raider officals took the unusual step Wednesday of confirming (or in their mind, correcting) Walker's salary figures. Per a team executive: Walker's deal will pay the WR $16 million over two seasons. Walker got $6 million to sign and salaries of $5 million each of the next two seasons.
Diehards Line:As Tribune staffer Jerry McDonald explained, the rest of the deal is heavily backloaded with money Walker won't see unless he flashes the form demonstrated as a Packer in 2004 and with Denver in 2006. McDonald went on to contend the fact that players are seldom one year after receiving a sizable signing bonus, Walker has essentially been guaranteed $16 million for two years. Profootballtalk.com's Mike Florio disagrees, suggesting that avoiding $5 million in base salary and carrying $5 million in dead money next year is a wash. If Walker doesn't work out this year, Florio believes the Raiders wouldn't hesitate to cut him.
