The Facts: While answering media questions on reporting day for the 49ers, GM John Lynch was in the midst of discussing which position group he was most excited to see in this year's training camp. Then, without prompting, Lynch brought up the team's starting running back. "You hear [HC Kyle Shanahan] talk about running backs and how they are going to respond, one guy as I'm talking through this, Carlos Hyde, I ran into him in the hall and he looks tremendous," Lynch said. "He really has dedicated himself. He's changed his body type this offseason and that to me at the least bit shows a commitment. There's those stories, but we're excited to see this whole thing as we take the next step."
Diehards Line:A short time later, Hyde told reporters he’s in the best shape of his life. In fact, it appears to be true, and it's helping to alter the pre-camp narrative that Hyde's spot on the roster, let alone his starting job, was in peril. ... Three years into his NFL career, Hyde's talent has never been in question. The real issue for Hyde has been staying on the field long enough to make a profound difference. So when Hyde entered the offseason searching for ways to increase durability, solidify his spot on the depth chart and fit into Shanahan's outside zone rushing scheme, he set his sights on becoming lighter and faster. When Hyde checked in for the start of camp, he weighed a lean 228 pounds. According to him, it's the first time he has been under 230 since he was in high school. The results through the first week of training camp have been mostly positive. Hyde is still working as the primary starter and is gradually finding his groove in Shanahan's offense. Indeed, the last two days of practice have shown what Hyde brings to the table. He has steamrolled 49ers defensive backs in each of the sessions, showing that he hasn’t lost power despite losing weight in hopes of becoming the nimbler player the 49ers wanted at running back. Expect his ADP to rise if the positive reports continue.
