The Facts: It's still early in the offseason, but Marshall sounds like he believes he'll be back with the Jets in 2017. Marshall told NJ Advance Media on Tuesday that the organization has given him "no indication" -- in his conversations with Jets brass -- that he won't return.
Diehards Line:
As NJ.com's Darryl Slater notes, this obviously isn't binding. The Jets could still cut Marshall, give him permission to seek a trade, or ask him to take a pay cut as a condition of his return next season. But Marshall's view -- at this point, from talking to the organization's decision makers -- is that they want him back for a third season. "They haven't said anything otherwise," Marshall said. Still, as Slater notes, Marshall turns 33 in March and is coming off a miserable season. He is entering the final year of his contract. He is due to count $7.5 million against the Jets' salary cap, but all of that is his non-guaranteed base salary. So the Jets would save the full amount, with no dead money attached, if they cut him. That has fueled speculation that he could be gone, amid a rebuild. So it's a situation we'll continue to watch.
