The Facts: Following up on an ongoing story. ... As the Browns prepare for their first mandatory day off of training camp, first-year HC Hue Jackson seems to be on the verge of naming his first starting quarterback in Cleveland. "[W]e're getting close," Jackson told reporters on Tuesday. "I know you guys want to know. You guys will be the first to know, I promise you that."
Diehards Line:
It would be a shock at this point if the starter isn’t Griffin. Although the Browns insisted after signing him that he’d have to earn whatever he gets, the competition wasn’t as, well, competitive as it could have been. Still, as PFT noted, if Griffin is the guy the Browns want, why dilute his preparation by giving first-team reps to someone else? Besides, and as Griffin said on the first day of practice, “Obviously there’s only one of us that runs 4.3.” That's true. But one of them, Josh McCown, can throw the ball. Nonetheless, expect Griffin to get the gig sooner rather than later (then it will be on him to keep it).
