The Facts: Griffin took all the first-team reps on the first day of Browns training camp Friday, and is clearly the frontrunner at quarterback. It doesn't look like much of a competition, and it won't be long before Hue Jackson names him the starter. At the latest, he'll wait until just before the first preseason game Aug. 12 in Green Bay. But if Friday's practice is any indication, there's no need to wait even that long.
Diehards Line:
This according to Plain Dealer staffer Mary Kay Cabot, who noted that Griffin worked exclusively with the ones, and his main challenger, Josh McCown, worked with the twos. Rookie Cody Kessler and Austin Davis stepped in after that. Cabot added: "Griffin is clearly Jackson's hand-picked guy, and the fifth-year pro needs all the reps he can get to prepare for opening day Sept. 11 in Philadelphia. ..." Jackson said there's "no question" Griffin is the same elite athlete who threw for 3,200 yards and 20 TDs — and rushed for 815 yards and seven TDs — in 2012 en route to Pro Bowl and NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors. We'll continue to watch for signs of that -- and it sounds like we'll get ample opportunity to see what Griffin's got in coming weeks.
