The Facts: The Bills plan on limiting McCoy's carries in training camp this summer and might only play him for one or two drives in their preseason games this August. RBs coach Anthony Lynn said Wednesday that McCoy's lack of reps this spring has been "by design," adding, "[to] keep him fresh, going into his eighth year, [there is] a lot of miles on those legs. So we'll do the same thing without training camp with him."
Diehards Line:
McCoy has not participated in most drills during mandatory minicamp this week with what coach Rex Ryan said is an ankle injury. Ryan previously characterized McCoy's limitations during organized team activities as hamstring tightness, but said Tuesday that he misspoke about McCoy's ailment. Asked specifically about how much the Bills will limit McCoy in training camp, Lynn said, "Just managing him and making sure we get him enough rest. I always do that with backs, as soon as they get to the eighth, ninth, 10th year. You got to take care of those guys, especially if you're going to use them during the season like we're gonna use him." Lynn also anticipates using McCoy less than other offensive starters during the preseason. McCoy rushed 203 times for 895 yards last season, the third-lowest totals of his seven-year NFL career. He was limited to 12 games because of a preseason hamstring injury that lingered into September, as well as a knee injury that kept him out of the final two games of the regular season. The Bills are wise to rest him this summer.
