The Facts: Following up on a previous item. ... Via Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, the fourth-year Chargers wideout receives $20 million fully guaranteed at signing. He also gets a $9.5 million signing bonus.
Diehards Line:
Rapoport characterizes the $20 million as “new money.” If accurate, this makes the practical guarantee at signing $21.656 million, since Allen already was due to earn $1.656 million in the final year of his rookie deal. If he’s still getting the “old money” in 2016, he’ll get another $20 million fully guaranteed in “new money” on top of it. And $20 million plus $1.656 million is $21.656 million. So Allen signed a four-year, $45 million extension. He now has a five-year, $46.656 million contract. The contract also contains another $4 million in escalators, incentives, and/or performance-driven bonuses. Without knowing the triggers, it’s impossible to assess the likelihood that Allen will hit the numbers.
