The Facts: While Colin Kaepernick continues his rehabilitation from three surgeries, Gabbert is apparently acting the part of the 49ers' starting quarterback during the offseason program. "He's definitely taking control," TE Garrett Celek said last week of Gabbert. "Whoever's at quarterback needs to take control and be our leader out there. And he's definitely doing that."
He's making good decisions on the field.
Diehards Line:
Last week, Kaepernick was seen on the practice field shadowing the movements of the three healthy quarterbacks – Gabbert, Thad Lewis and Dylan Thompson. Kaepernick pantomimed in slow motion the mechanics of throwing a football. When Kaepernick is healthy, he is expected to compete with Gabbert for the starting job. Gabbert is getting a head start on performing the offense on the field, and he appears to be acting the part of the starter off the field, too. When asked if Gabbert is a natural leader, Celek answered, “Absolutely. Whether it’s in the locker room or out on the field, everyone has a good relationship with him. And him motivating us is good.” Kaepernick and Gabbert both started eight games for the 49ers last season. Kaepernick completed 59 percent of his 244 attempts for 1,615 yards with six touchdowns and five interceptions for a passer rating of 78.5. He rushed for 256 yards and one touchdown. Gabbert completed 63.1 percent of his 282 attempts for 2,031 yards with 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions for a 86.2 rating. He rushed for 185 yards and one touchdown.
