The Facts: Scot McCloughan characterized the ongoing negotiations with Cousins as "positive," but the Redskins' GN also hinted that much work remains. "We're still in discussions and they're positive," McCloughan said Monday at Redskins Park. "You know, it takes both sides to get to an agreement. But…it's a positive thing and there's a positive feeling here about him."
Diehards Line:
Asked if he thinks a deal between the Redskins and Cousins is within reach, McCloughan said: “Yeah, I think so.” Cousins signed the nearly $20 million franchise tag tender March 3, just two days after it was placed on him. In the meantime, the Redskins and Cousins’ agent, Mike McCartney, have continued to work toward a long-term extension. The deadline for reaching a multi-year extension is July 15. If an agreement is not reached prior to that date, Cousins will play next season on the tag and cannot sign an extension until after the season. Recent history suggests that if a deal does in fact get done, it will be finalized close to the deadline.
