The Facts: GM Mike Maccagnan made it obvious during a conference call Friday with reporters that re-signing Ryan Fitzpatrick is the team's preferable option at the quarterback position. But what if Fitzpatrick signs elsewhere? How would Maccagnan feel about perhaps starting Smith? "[He] was technically ahead of Ryan going into preseason," Maccagnan said of Smith. "We never had the benefit of Geno working through the preseason, competing with Ryan, to see how that would've unfolded."
Diehards Line:
That's because Smith lost his job in 2015 to Fitzpatrick after then-teammate IK Enemkpali punched Smith during the preseason and broke his jaw. "That incident, when it happened, it was very unfortunate because we felt Geno had a very good offseason that year," Maccagnan added, "The whole incident within the locker room obviously changed everything." Smith played in one game last season, a loss at Oakland, and he threw two touchdowns and one interception. His career numbers: 27 touchdowns and 35 picks. Still, the Jets are said to prefer Fitzpatrick if the price is right. So far it isn't.
