The Facts: Benjamin will participate on a limited basis during OTAs and minicamp, but should be full-go for the start of training camp.
Diehards Line:
Benjamin, who in 2014 set Panthers’ receiving records for rookies, tore his left ACL in August during a training camp practice with the Dolphins. He began jogging in December and also has done some light cutting, Gettleman said. GM Dave Gettleman praised the way Benjamin has approached his rehab after a period during which Benjamin felt sorry for himself following his season-ending knee surgery last summer. Gettleman also said the 6-5 Benjamin, who has struggled with his weight at times, has held steady at 238 pounds during the rehab process. “Kelvin has worked his fanny off,” Gettleman said last Wednesday during the NFL Scouting Combine. Gettleman said concern over the Panthers’ receiving depth behind Benjamin prompted him to trade up in last year’s draft to take former Michigan wideout Devin Funchess in the second round. Gettleman said it’s exciting to envision having Benjamin and Funchess on the field together. “I had that conversation with (offensive coordinator) Mike Shula two days ago,” Gettleman said. “It’s certainly fun to think about. But we’ll see.”
