The Facts: Following up on the ongoing story. ... Talking to reporters at the NFL combine in Indianapolis, GM Tom Telesco said he would like to keep TEs Antonio Gates and Ladarius Green. "We'll kind of see how it goes," Telesco said. "We're going to talk with their agents here. ... And we'll kind of see how it shakes out from there."
Diehards Line:
Both players are slated to become unrestricted agents on March 9. Telesco said he believes the team doesn’t have to choose between Gates and Green, and the Chargers have enough cap room to keep both. “We can do both if we have to, which we’d like to do,” Telesco said. “As far as where we’re at cap-wise, we can handle both.” Gates turns 36 in June, but said at the end of the year he would like to continue playing. And Telesco said he would like Gates to retire as a Charger. At just 25 years old, Green could interest other teams because of his age, athleticism and potential. However Green is very familiar with San Diego’s offense, knows he’s a fit in offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt’s scheme, and would be the likely replacement for Gates when he retires.
