The Facts: The Titans have a young, potential franchise QB who has a high degree of mobility. But there's a sense the Titans don't want him to use those skills. His new HC anticipates that Mariota will use those abilities, to an extent. "We're not going to run him like they run Cam Newton with some of these designed counter plays and things up the middle that are gonna expose him by any means, but I think he's such a threat in the run game for defenses," Mike Mularkey said. "It just gives you an advantage. ... There is no extra guy when you have a quarterback like Marcus who can, and we saw it last year, go eighty yards if he has to, to be effective in the run game."
Diehards Line:Mariota's rookie season was solid enough. He tossed 19 touchdown passes while racking up 2,818 passing yards. He clearly made the transition from the spread offense he operated under Chip Kelly in Oregon. But fantasy owners would love to see Mularkey, who was the OC in Pittsburgh when Kordell Stewart was under center for the Steelers, can maximize Mariota's potential by turning him loose more as a runner. Last season's 34 carries (for 252 yards and two touchdowns) didn't come close to showcasing his skills in that area. It sounds like the coach realizes it would be in his best interests to play up Mariota's strengths.
