The Facts: Martin has quickly become one of the game's most attractive free-agent possibilities. The second ranked rusher in the league with 941 yards on 188 carries (5.0 per carry), Martin could leave for a big pay day elsewhere. It's apparent, though, that the Bucs don't want that to happen. "Is Doug Martin a priority? I can say that, yeah, he definitely is,' HC Lovie Smith said Monday, one day after Martin ran for 235 yards during the 45-17 victory over the Eagles. "I don't think Doug came into the season thinking he wasn't wanted around here. It's the complete opposite of that.
Diehards Line:
The Bucs had a $4.3-million decision to make regarding Martin last offseason, and at the time it was an easy one. After watching Martin struggle through two difficult seasons, the Bucs opted not to pick up the $5.6-million, fifth-year option on his contract, leaving him with a $1.3 million salary for the 2015 season. But the move also allows Martin to become a free agent after this year. And as Smith noted, "We have put him in a position to have the type of year he’s having right now. So, I think it’s all good. If I’m Doug Martin, I’m pretty happy I didn’t sign a contract before and I like the position I’m in right now.’’ True story.
