The Facts: According to multiple reports, the Lions fired OC Joe Lombardi, OL coach Jeremiah Washburn and assistant OL coach Terry Heffernan. QBs coach Jim Bob Cooter will move into Lombardi's job the team's new OC.
Diehards Line:
As ESPN.com noted prior to the news, HC Jim Caldwell described it better than anyone. For a stretch of Sunday afternoon, the Detroit Lions were “inept” offensively. They couldn’t block. They couldn’t move. They couldn’t score. They really could do nothing right. It was evident in the numbers -- seven yards of offense in the second and third quarters. After a brief offensive surge last week against Chicago, it was back to the same old inconsistency on Sunday against Minnesota. This has been the same thing with the Lions for weeks now, especially offensively: show flashes of offensive brilliance, follow it with long stretches of, to use the Detroit coach's word, ineptitude. “That was only in stretches,” Caldwell said. “There was a stretch there where we were inept. That’s the fact of the matter. No sugarcoating it. So I will leave it at that.” But didn't leave it at that. He fired Lombardi and the others and named Cooter the team's new coordinator. TEs coach Ron Prince takes over for Washburn as the OC coach. He also remains the team’s assistant HC. RBs coach Curtis Modkins continues in that role and will also be the team's run-game coordinator moving forward. Special teams assistant Devin Fitzsimmons takes over as the new TEs coach with Prince moving over to the offensive line.
