The Facts: Not that Smith needs extra incentive to attend the Jets' offseason program, technically voluntary, but he has a nice chunk of money at stake as he prepares for his third season. Smith's contract includes a clause that ties about 32 percent of his 2015 compensation to offseason attendance -- specifically, $276,328. He must participate in a minimum number of workouts (typically, it's 80 percent) to earn the bonus.
Diehards Line:
As ESPN.com's Rich Cimini notes, Smith didn't have any bonus money in the first two years of his contract, except, of course, for his signing bonus ($2 million). It's also worth noting there's no guaranteed money remaining in his contract. Indeed, this is a huge offseason for Smith, who will be challenged by Ryan Fitzpatrick and must learn a new offense for the second time in three years. With Fitzpatrick still recovering from a broken leg, Smith is expected to get most of the offseason reps.
