The Facts: HC Jay Gruden might have named Griffin his starting QB going into the 2015 season, but they’re still deciding what to do with him the year after that. Via Rich Tandler of CSNWashington.com, GM Scot McCloughan said they hadn’t decided whether to pick up the fifth-year option for 2016 on Griffin’s rookie contract. “We’ve had some early discussion on it,” McCloughan said. “We’re still talking it through.”
Diehards Line:
That option would cost them $16 million, and they have until May 3 to make a decision. Meanwhile, McCloughan also said he wouldn't rule out taking a QB with the No. 5 overall pick in the draft. All in all, the evidence that Gruden isn't necessarily content with Griffin as his starter continues to mount. As NFL.com's Marc Sessler put it, the team's uncertainty about picking up the fifth-year option and failure to rule out drafting a QB early are a "decidedly lukewarm approach to take with your franchise quarterback. ..." It remains a situation worth watching.
