The Facts: Following up on a previous item. ... After the team missed twice on a free-agent wide receiver last week, it agreed to terms with Johnson on a three-year contract, sources said Tuesday.
Diehards Line:
The former 49ers and Bills wide receiver deliberated between two offers, one from the Chargers, the other from the defending-champ Patriots. This after the team failed to retain Eddie Royal, who signed with the Bears, and Andre Johnson, who took less money to sign with Indianapolis. San Diego reportedly came very close on both (they also made a push to land Randal Cobb before he re-signed with Green Bay). So Stevie Johnson is it. The veteran spent last season in San Francisco before being released to clear cap space. His other six in the NFL were with Buffalo, a stint that saw him produce consecutive 1,000-yard campaigns from 2010 to 2012. While his production has since dipped — he averaged 516 yards the past two years — there is thought the right scheme, role and quarterback could reverse that. The Chargers feel they can help him. We shall see.
