The Facts: Following up on the ongoing story. ... In Houston, the contracts given to Hoyer and Ryan Mallett suggest that Hoyer has the early lead in the competition to determine the starting quarterback.
Diehards Line:
PFT's Mike Florio, citing a source with knowledge of the contracts, reports that Hoyer signed a two-year, $10.5 million deal with $4.75 million fully guaranteed. The total package is worth $10.5 million, with a $3.75 million roster bonus due on March 16, 2016. If not exercised, it will be a one-year, $5.25 million deal — with $500,000 tied to per-game roster bonuses. Mallett’s two-year deal is worth $7 million over two years, with only $1.75 million guaranteed. He’ll make $3.5 million each year, with $62,500 tied to per-game roster bonuses. Florio added, it won’t matter if Mallett outperforms the more experienced Hoyer in the offseason program, training camp, and/or the preseason, or if Hoyer wins the job and struggles. But the financial investments made in both guys suggests that Hoyer has the early edge.
