The Facts: Last season was supposed to be Reed's breakout campaign. But instead of harnessing his game-changing potential, the immensely-talented-yet-oft-injured tight end was sidelined twice by hamstring injuries (left and right) and finished with subpar totals given his ability. Assuming he stays healthy, however, CSNWashington.com's Tarik El-Bashir considers him a breakout candidate again this year.
Diehards Line:
El-Bashir, noting that Reed's athleticism, versatility and importance on third down are undeniable, was quick to concede the TE's inability to stay healthy for long stretches is going to define his career until he proves that he can. Is this the year? Can adjustments to his offseason training routine help him avoid future soft-tissue injuries? How about subtle adjustments to his game? He noted last season that he's suffered a couple of leg injuries while attempting to hurdle a defender and that he intends to avoid those plays. There's no way to know the answers to those questions now. But El-Bashir added: "Can you imagine the numbers Reed could produce if he plays a full 16-game schedule and the Redskins' offense gets steady play at quarterback? It wouldn't be a stretch to expect a season with 60 catches, 800 yards, 40 first downs and six touchdowns. And a possibly a Pro Bowl berth. ..." All big ifs, but all worth noting.
