The Facts: Prater said after the season he wanted to re-sign with the Lions this offseason. He liked the coaching staff, the locker room and kicking indoors at Ford Field. He also appreciated the way the organization gave him a second chance. GM Martin Mayhew reciprocated those feelings in a meeting with local reporters Friday morning at the NFL Scouting Combine. “I’m meeting with his agent tonight, in fact,” Mayhew said. “Frank Bauer and I are going to sit down tonight and talk about Matt’s situation and I’m looking forward to that dialogue.”
Diehards Line:
After Nate Freese and Alex Henery struggled to make just 4-of-12 field goal attempts the first five weeks of the season, Prater was signed Week 6 to stabilized the Lions’ kicking game, which he did. After joining the Lions, Prater tied for seventh in the NFL in field goals made with 21. Prater, 30, got better as the year went on after missing the first four games of the year due to a suspension for an alcohol related arrest while he was a Denver Bronco. He admitted to being a bit rusty when he made just 1-of-3 kicks in his first game as a Lion at Minnesota Week 6. Mayhew and the Lions believe Prater can regain the form that made him a Pro Bowl kicker in 2013. They're hoping he can be their kicker for the foreseeable future.
