The Facts: There's an interesting situation brewing in the Detroit Lions backfield. Morris could go from being a valuable No. 2 backup to a guy who gets squeezed off the final roster. According to MLive.com's Tom Kowalski, Morris' fortunes could turn on the knee rehabilitation of running back Kevin Smith, who blew out his ACL last December.
Diehards Line:Initially, it was believed that Smith wouldn't be ready until some time during in regular season, making Morris an important backup to rookie Jahvid Best. Smith, though, has been a big surprise with his rehab, and it appears he might be ready to return at some point early in training camp. As Kowalski explained, Smith's return would complicate things because he and Morris share the same skill set. It's also possible that the Lions, considering Smith's health and Best's rookie status, might decide to go ahead and keep all three to ensure they have a complete and healthy backfield. ... While Smith's progress is worth noting, we still expect Best to handle the lead role.
