Ford 400

The End is Near and Imminent…

I guess Florida is where everyone retires and that certainly includes the retirement of the 2007 NASCAR season at Homestead-Miami Speedway (HMS). Will the season end with a predictable finish or with an upset? If you have been following the season or at least the last nine races, you are fully aware that it is predictable. You might think that predictability leaves you without excitement since the outcome is expected, but it took a lot of action and uncertainty to get us to the finale. Not matter if the #48 or the #24 wins the NASCAR Nextel Cup Championship, we all need to reflect on the wild ride that got us to this point. Every lap of every race had given us something to remember and the last race of the season will be no different. We shall crown a champion with the final lap of the Ford 400 and add another chapter to NASCAR history.

The Checkered Four
(Current point standings)

Carl Edwards (9th) Roush/Fenway Racing - Ford – Carl can’t expect to have engine problems two weekends in a row, so the #99 car will be doing what it always does by finishing no worse than the Top 15 at Homestead. The last two times (out of three starts) that Carl has raced here, he finished 4th and 8th; respectively.

Tony Stewart (5th) Joe Gibbs Racing – Chevrolet – If the Checker Auto Parts 500 were 550, we may have seen Tony taking the checkered flag. Tony seems to be very hungry for a win. Tony has finished 15th the last two times he has driven this 1 ½ mile track and he certainly wants to better his stats by giving the NASCAR fans a Top 5 or maybe a win. It has been 13 races since Tony has visited Victory Lane.

Kevin Harvick (7th) Richard Childress Racing – Chevrolet – Besides a 20th place finish in 2002, Kevin has finished in the Top 10 every other time out of his six starts at Homestead. Kevin doesn’t really have much left to prove this season, but he might just want to add another win to the one he got in Daytona earlier this year.

Greg Biffle (15th) Roush/Fenway Racing – Ford – Oh my goodness, this is yet another track that the infamous Jeff Gordon hasn’t won a race at, but the “Biff” has out done everybody on the active driver’s list and boasted 3 wins. With his momentum from last weekend at Phoenix where he finished 2nd, Greg is sure to finish in the Top 10 this weekend. Greg took the checkered flag here just one year ago.

Underdogs
(Current point standings)

Clint Bowyer (3rd) Richard Childress Racing – Chevrolet – Clint has raced at HMS only once and finished 10th, but with Kyle Busch so successful this season and right behind Clint in chase points, Clint will definitely be racing hard and finishing in the Top 10 again.

Kasey Kahne (19th) Gillett Evernham Motorsports – Dodge – Kasey did blow it last Sunday by driving a little on the edge, but his guilty conscience will enable him to put himself back around the Top 15, which is where he has finished (except for last Sunday) in the last six races. Kasey did finish 4th the last time he raced at Homestead in 2006.

Most likely to be a lap down
(Current point standings)

Casey Mears (16th) Hendrick Motorsports – Chevrolet – Casey does have one Top 5 finish (2005) at HMS, but that must have been an end of the season gift. Casey has raced at this track four times and all the other times, his finishes resulted in 26, 27 and 32. That puts his average finish at this track around 22nd place. Don’t use him, just loose him.

J.J. Yeley (20th) Joe Gibbs Racing – Chevrolet – J.J. and his crew chief mismanaged the amount of fuel he had during the last race at Homestead in 2006 and fell short by three laps, so we really don’t have a correct gauge on how he really runs at this track. Without solid stats, J.J. is a risky and unwise choice.
