This Saturday at Lowe’s Motor Speedway (LMS) is marked as a hometown race for most drivers whose shop and residence is located in North Carolina and it also marks the one and only night race in the chase.  The NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers have been to LMS already this season, but the track conditions is May were completely different than what is to be expected from a cooler seasoned track under the lights.   Expectations for the chase drivers will be hightened merely by the fact that is weekend’s race marks the halfway point in the race for the Cup championship.  This and the previous four races point standings will forecast what is to be anticipated for the rest of the chase.  At this central point, five out of the twelve drivers know they are no longer in contention of the championship regardless of whether there are five more races after LMS or its not over till its over.  Brian Vickers, Kasey Kahne, Ryan Newman, Denny Hamlin, and Carl Edwards unfortunately should throw in the towel and start logging data for next season.  Greg Biffle and Kurt Busch are holding on to Cup dreams; barely.  That means, that five drivers are giving everything they and their teams have to finish this season on top.  It is still too early to pick a champion, but it soon will be in reach after the next couple of races.  LMS will definitely jumble the point standings and give a few non-chase drivers a great finish.  Jeff Burton (October 2008 LMS winner), Kyle Busch, and Jamie McMurray all finished in the Top Ten last season and will be looking to do the same this Saturday.
