The date of the race may have changed, but the drivers remain the same. Honestly, there was really no effort I had to put into this article, expect for maybe change a driver or two. Apparently, Lowes Motor Speedway (LMS) is pretty predictable as far as who runs well. However, that is good when you need to make up some points in your fantasy league or bring home some money you placed on a bet. Oh, one thing not to bet on is any driver that has a Richard Childress engine. The RCR engines were dropping off like flies last weekend at Talladega. You know too, that Dale Jr. was in it to win it. Lowe’s doesn’t offer the ever restricting restrictor plate racing, so don’t expect the same results as last weekend. Expect to enjoy the last night race of the season and the fifth race for the Nextel Cup.

The Checkered Four
(Current point standings)

Jimmie Johnson (2nd) Hendrick Motorsports - Chevrolet – I almost get weak in the knees when I look at the success Jimmie has had at this track. Sometimes it is almost unbelievable. How could a driver have so much success at one particular track? I tell you how, Jimmie knows this track is owned by his primary sponsor and he knows not to let down the hand that feeds you. Twelve times, Jimmie has adorned us with his presence at LMS and he spent 11 times giving us a Top 10, 8 times giving us a Top 5, 2 times giving us a pole, and 5 times giving us a win.

Denny Hamlin (9th) Joe Gibbs Racing – Chevrolet – Inch by inch, Denny is making his way up the ladder of the NASCAR Nextel cup point standings. Could we be possibly looking at a new champion this season? Denny finished 9th back in May and added his 4th Top 10 out of 5 starts.

Tony Stewart (4th) Joe Gibbs Racing – Chevrolet – Denial, denial, and denial. One of these weekends, Tony is going to have to get a fair break and make it into victory lane. Tony did make it into the Top 10 his last time out and if you know Tony, he will definitely be trying to get a win before the season is over. Do you remember last year?

Carl Edwards (6th) Roush Fenway Racing – Ford – Well, Carl contested the penalties he received and the results are the same. Could Carl and team members have ruined his chance at both the Busch and Nextel Cup Series title due to a minor infraction? If he comes up short to take the cup by 25 points we will know the truth. Carl has a great chance this Saturday to stir things up by bringing home another great finish. Carl will be making his 6th trip to the home of NASCAR and he should be looking at adding his 5th Top 10.

Underdogs
(Current point standings)

Bobby Labonte (18th) Petty Enterprises – Dodge – Again, another organization that got the short end of the stick. You get one driver caught up in an accident and guess what, the other driver follows suit. Bobby is going to bring his #43 car back into the limelight and finish in the Top 15 again, or make way for his owner Kyle Petty. Either way, Petty Enterprises will be doing better than last weekend.

Reed Sorenson (23rd) Chip Ganassi/Sabates Racing – Dodge – Reed made a great effort finishing in the Top 10 last weekend, but apparently something in the height of the body didn’t sit so well with NASCAR and he got fined and docked some points. At least for Reed, he isn’t in the chase and has a secure position in owner points.

Most likely to be a lap down
(Current point standings)

Kyle Busch (8th) Hendrick Motorsports – Chevrolet – Kyle said it last weekend, he is out of the chase. I agree, but there is always next year in a Toyota at Joe Gibbs Racing. Let me give you a little information, Kyle is going to be making his presence know. He may be faced down in the dirt this season, but next season he will be standing tall brushing off the dust and making some noise.

Greg Biffle (16th) Roush Fenway Racing – Ford – Funny back in May when Greg was in this same position in this article he was in the 16th position driving the #16 car. Back in May, Greg came in dead last (43rd) due to an accident. This driver has ranked an average finish at LMS around the 27th spot.
