Talladega Superspeedway (TSS). Now, why do they refer to it as a super speedway when they intentionally restrict the speed? Maybe it should be called “Talladega, the used to be super speedway.” I understand the issue of safety, but how cool would it be to watch 43 drivers fly around the track at over 200 mph? TSS is the fastest, largest, most competitive, and steepest track on the Nextel Cup series schedule with 33 degree banking in the north and south turns. 33 degrees! Think about it. At 90 degrees, you are completely sideways. Take a little less than half of that and you get the picture. The restriction on the speed of the cars allows for a more evenly keeled race because of the reduction in horsepower. Experience, skill and a few kin are going to win the race this weekend.

The Checkered Four
(Current point standings)

Jeff Gordon (6th) Hendrick Motorsports – Chevrolet – Momma, I’m goin’ fast. Well, as fast as the restrictor plate will let me. Jeff may complain about not having any friends on the race track, but if he wants to keep going fast, he is going to have to play nice with teammates Jimmie Johnson, Kyle Busch, and Brian Vickers and do some easy bump drafting. Jeff has 4 wins at TSS with 11 Top 5’s and 14 Top 10’s.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. (7th) Dale Earnhardt Inc. – Chevrolet – Dale and restrictor plate tracks go together like Chinese food and chocolate pudding. Dale has the most wins (5) at Talladega out of the current driver line up and 7 Top 5’s and 8 Top 10’s. He’ll get an early birthday (10/10) present from Talladega by finishing in the Top 5.

Tony Stewart (11th) Joe Gibbs Racing - Chevrolet – Tony’s just a big hairy American winning machine. He won last week at Kansas Speedway because of a hairy gamble. Tony has to be careful for this race; the fuel cell only holds 13 gallons, not the typical 22 for other tracks. Tony has nothing to loose in these last seven races. With no win at TSS yet and 10 Top 10’s, he will be driving for the checkered flag. Tony will have a lot of competition up front, but in the end you can’t have two #1’s; that makes 11.

Kurt Busch (14th) Penske Racing – Dodge – Dear Lord baby Jesus, please let me avoid “The big one.” If Kurt can qualify in the Top 15 and stay there, he will be able to avoid the guaranteed carnage that awaits the drivers in the back of the pack and finish in the Top 10. Out of 11 starts, he has 8 of them already. That’s awesome!

Underdogs
(Current point standings)

Bobby Labonte (25th) Petty Enterprises – Dodge – Make Ricky Bobby proud Labonte, Bobby. As long as his Evernham engine holds up, Bobby will too. He has one win from the pole at TSS way back in 1998, but his veteran ability and 10 Top 10’s will keep him in the Top 15.

Jamie McMurray (20th) Roush Racing – Ford – Shake & bake brother; shake & bake. C’mon, I had to put the #26 in the line up for the Talladega race. Actually, Jamie is not a bad choice. He finished 5th in the May race here and has an average Top 15 finish. Wonder if he will be sporting a new paint scheme?

Most likely to be a lap down
(Current point standings)

Kyle Busch (9th) Hendrick Motorsports – Chevrolet – If you ain’t first, you’re last and that is exactly where Kyle will be this Sunday. I hate to say it, but Kyle’s chances for the chase are more than officially over. Kyle and restrictor plate super speedways do not mix. He has started at Talladega three times and his best finish was 32nd.

Martin Truex Jr. (21st) Dale Earnhardt Inc. – Chevrolet – Martin likes the garages at Talladega. He spends most of his time there during the race. Two out of three races here, he’s been involved in an accident. Maybe it would be a good idea for him to get out of the car and let his jack man drive. His car just might finish the race.
