Sylvania 300

The Chase for the Nextel Cup is on!

For the hallowed ten, the Sylvania 300 will mark the first race in the Chase for the Nextel Cup Championship. New Hampshire International Speedway (NHIS) races like a juiced up short track. It is flat, but it is fast. With the top ten guys in the chase racing for the most points and the rest of the field feeling slightly bitter from not making the chase, its going to be a fully accelerated, garage visiting, heavily cautioned 317.4 miles of combat.

The Checkered Four
(Current point standings)

Jimmie Johnson (2nd ) Hendrick Motorsports – Chevrolet – This must be Jimmie’s second favorite track to Lowe’s Motor Speedway. This guy has been to this track a whopping 9 times and the worst he has finished was in 15th place. Not to mention he took the checked flag twice. Rest assured that when Jimmie drives in New Hampshire, he’ll be crackin’ at least a top 10.

Kyle Busch (4th) Hendrick Motorsports - Chevrolet – Kyle likes to be up front. He proved that by finishing first here in July. Except for a poor run for this race last season in his rookie year, he has finished in the top 5 in the other two races. With the momentum he has from running so strong in the last few races, there is no stopping Kyle. Top 5 for sure.

Denny Hamlin (5th) Joe Gibbs Racing – Chevrolet – For a normal rookie, it takes a full season for a driver to become accustomed to the tracks, other drivers, rules and regulations, blah; blah. For Denny, he drives like he could be a champion contender. Oh, wait that’s right; he is. Denny loves flat tracks. Does Pocono ring a bell? Another Top 5.

Tony Stewart (11th) Joe Gibbs Racing – Chevrolet – Do you smell smoke? Well, if not, you’re going to this weekend. Tony missed the chase for the Nextel Cup by a mere 16 points. You better believe that he is going to show that his 11th place in the points is just one bad race and the next 10 races will be Tony time. Tony runs super fast in the turns at this track and there is where you will see a lot of action from him. Tony is going for the win.

Underdogs
(Current point standings)

Clint Bowyer (16th) Richard Childress Racing – Chevrolet - He is not a Denny Hamlin, but Clint would be an excellent understudy. He has not had the success as the current point’s leader for the Raybestos Rookie of the year; however, he can hang with the big dogs. Clint runs really well on flat tracks. Not counting his last race here, oh and Pocono, Clint will be an easy selection to be in the top 15.

David Stremme (34th) Chip Ganassi Racing – Dodge – David is the quiet silent type. With David’s first start here back in July, he finished 11th. Who knew? If you don’t pay attention he will sneak up on you. Come Sunday, David will be slipping into the top 10. Watch out.

Most likely to be a lap down
(Current point standings)

Casey Mears (15th) Chip Ganassi Racing – Dodge – If Casey keeps his hair super short to help with the aerodynamics of his driving, will somebody please tell him that if it hasn’t worked this far, it isn’t going to. This driver can’t even break into the top 15 at NHIS.

Jamie McMurray (19th) Roush Racing – Ford – Representing the bottom of Roush Racing, Jamie will not be making a step up at NHIS because this race track does not seem to like him. Since the switch to Roush he qualified 33rd and finished 33rd at this track. He is not a mover or a shaker.
