Sylvania 300

No Baker’s Dozen

It took 380 laps last weekend at Richmond for NASCAR to record the contenders for the roster in the chase for the Nextel Cup Championship of 2007. And for all 380 laps, fans of the #8 were on the edge of their seats, hoping and praying for a little short of a miracle or straight intervention from heaven above. Dale Earnhardt Jr. fell one cookie short of making his last season with Dale Earnhardt Incorporated a successful one in terms of the championship. It is not that he didn’t put every last bit of effort into making his final attempt to add points to his just coming up short total. I think last week’s race was one of the best shows on the NASCAR circuit that I have seen all season. I can kick myself in the rear for not going this year. I think it has to do a lot with the leveling of the field with the COT car. This Sunday at New Hampshire International Speedway (NHIS), we are in for a similar surprise. The COT car will ride again and we should see comparable racing and new faces up front.

The Checkered Four
(Current point standings)

Jeff Gordon (2nd) Hendrick Motorsports – Chevrolet – I am getting really exasperated by the fact that either Jeff Gordon or Jimmie Johnson are winning race after race. I enjoy their expertise, but I would really like to see some other driver win for once. I don’t see that happening this weekend. I had to pick the #24 or #48 for this race because of how successful they are at this track. Jeff has 3 wins, 11 Top 5’s and 4 Top 10’s out of 25 races, to include two Top 5’s in the last two races at NHIS.

Denny Hamlin (6th) Joe Gibbs Racing – Chevrolet – This is another track that Denny is a master at; and why not. This track is a sibling of his favorite Pocono track. Denny’s results here are just off the charts. He won this race in July and finished 4th and 6th for both races in 2006; respectively.

Jeff Burton (10th) Richard Childress Racing – Chevrolet – Wow, for once it is a different Jeff that has the most wins at a track. Mr. Burton has four wins at NHIS, which is one more than Mr. Gordon. Jeff has finished 7th the last two times he has driven here and expect him to do that or better on Sunday.

Underdogs
(Current point standings)

J. J. Yeley (19th) Joe Gibbs Racing – Chevrolet – Did you hear? J.J. has a ride for next year with Hall of Fame Racing. So, at least now he can focus on racing hard and not whether or not he has got a job next season. He has managed to get a Top 10 at New Hampshire back in 2006 and has shown some consistency for the other three times he has raced here. It was either J.J. or Robby Gordon, but J.J. had a better average finish of Top 15.

David Ragan (21st) Roush Fenway Racing – Ford – I know, I can’t believe the finish (3rd) that David had last weekend at Richmond for a COT race. That’s the main reason why I have selected him for this category this weekend. This will mark David’s second start at NHIS and quite possibly will give him another Top 15 finish before the day is over.

Most likely to be a lap down
(Current point standings)

Clint Bowyer (12th) Richard Childress Racing – Chevrolet – Clint graced his presence on my most likely to be a lap down back in July and because of his lack of progress then, he is still here. He finished 37th (which is his worst finish at NHIS so far) and it was his 3rd time at this track. I don’t think his performance this weekend will change his dead last position for the chase for the Nextel Cup.

Casey Mears (16th) Hendrick Motorsports – Chevrolet – Casey has been on this track at New Hampshire 9 times and still can’t even register a Top 15. There must be something about the little over a mile track than Casey just can’t seem to figure out.
