Pucker Up
Allstate 400 at the brickyard

One lucky driver will be applying extra Chap Stick as they roll across the start/finish line first after 400 miles and that driver will be among a small group of drivers that have had the unique privilege to pucker up and kiss the bricks at Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS). Only 9 drivers out of 13 races have knelt down and showed their respect to the 2.5 mile flat track. Past winners include Jeff Gordon (4 wins), Dale Jarrett (2 wins), Dale Earnhardt (1 win), Kevin Harvick (1 win), Jimmie Johnson (1 win), Bill Elliott (1 win), Bobby Labonte (1 win), Ricky Rudd (1 win), and one of the most memorable winners, Tony Stewart with his first win at IMS in 2005.

The Checkered Four
(Current point standings)

Jeff Gordon (1st) Hendrick Motorsports - Chevrolet – Jeff’s lips have touched the bricks at IMS more than any other active driver in NASCAR and for good reason. Jeff has been driving for 15 years and 13 of them he has been racing at Indianapolis. He has crossed the start/finish line first 4 times and has an amazing 7 Top 5’s and 10 Top 10’s. He even holds the record for the most poles (3) at IMS of the active driver roster.

Carl Edwards (5th) Roush Fenway Racing – Ford – Carl is recovering for an injury that he received last weekend while driving at a dirt track, but don’t expect that to hinder his ability to run up front this Sunday. Look what happened to Denny Hamlin last season before a Richmond race. He had several stitches (19) on his finger and still finished second following his injury. This will mark Carl’s 3rd time to IMS and the last two times he has finished 9th (2006) and 12th (2005). We could quite possibly be seeing a back flip over the bricks.

Tony Stewart (6th) Joe Gibbs Racing – Chevrolet – Having a local boy like Tony get a win at IMS is like watching your own child score their first touch down. The second time will not be as emotional, but it would still feel as good for the #20 and all his orange Home Depot fans. Plus, Tony will be defending his home turf and will not let first place go easily to a tourist. Tony has 3 Top 5’s and 5 Top 10’s out of 8 starts.

Kevin Harvick (8th) Richard Childress Racing – Chevrolet – Wow, Kevin really knows his way around this Pocono-like track. His worst finish out of 6 attempts was 19th back in 2005. He is recorded as a past winner in 2003 and with his incredible running this season so far, Kevin will definitely be a contender for the kiss.

Underdogs
(Current point standings)

Kyle Busch (9th) Hendrick Motorsports – Chevrolet – Right about now, Kyle has got to feel like an unwanted puppy at the pound. He doesn’t have his future paved out for him yet and he is still trying to find some owner to want him. Well, just like the past several races, this race at IMS will show all team owners that were shying away from him why they might rethink their decision. Kyle is fairly new to the Indy track only running twice so far, but that will not stop him from making another Top 10 to add to the two he already has.

Clint Bowyer (10th) Richard Childress Racing – Chevrolet – Clint’s been to IMS one time and he came in 4th and gave himself a Top 5. Well, don’t think that last season’s success here was just luck. Clint is kicking serious tailpipe this season and he will be doing that too at Indianapolis.

Most likely to be a lap down
(Current point standings)

Martin Truex Jr. (11th) Dale Earnhardt Incorporated – Chevrolet – Martin thought he was going to be the golden boy at DEI once Dale Jr. left, but add in a legend and Martin Truex Jr. gets put back as second string to Mark Martin. Yeah, believe it or not, but Ginn Racing and DEI has decided to merge. It will not matter for Martin anyways. His recent success (despite his engine blow out at Chicagoland) will be over shadowed by his lack luster run at IMS. Martin has 2 tries at Indy and his best finish was 19th. His other attempt left him wrecked and out of the race.

Elliott Sadler (23rd) Evernham Motorsports – Dodge – I guess pretty much all of the Evernham boys need to focus on their COT package for next season. None of the three teams (9, 10, & 19) don’t even have a chance to make it into the chase and are all praying for one more good finish before the end of 2007. Elliott will not be doing any great feats at IMS. He has the most experience at this track of his teammates and only has a Top 5 and a Top 10 out of 8 starts.
