Allstate 400 at the
Brickyard
July 26, 2009 (Sunday) 2:00 pm – ESPN
I was wondering to myself, “What is so great or interesting
about Indiana?” Personally, I would say because I was born
there and so were Tony Stewart, David Letterman, and Larry Bird; White Castles
Burgers is partically on every corner (I love those lil’ burgers), and of course the Indianapolis 500 and its proud hosting track,
the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
If you check out this website
http://www.50states.com/facts/indiana.htm
devoted to the Top 50 Interesting
Facts about Indiana,
Number 1 is Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS).
Also, Google a map, it will show that the race track is almost dead
center in the state of Indiana. The heart of Hoosier land. Where else in the world does the winning
driver of the race kiss the bricks of the very track he just beat? That a bond you just can’t get anywhere else.
Last season, the Allstate 400 at
the Brickyard was a racing tradgey. As everybody knows, Goodyear dropped the
rubber and designed a tire that was intimdated and
ran for cover when it was faced with the asphalt of the IMS. Per the opinions and comments of several
drivers that tested the new tire that Goodyear created for this Allstate 400,
the rubber will be happy with the road and should stick it out for the entire
160 laps. Jeff
Gordon, whose was one of thirty drivers to test the new tire even went
as far to say that he guaranteed there would be no problems with the tires at
Indy for this weekend’s race. And who
better to make that prediction than Jeff.
He is the winningest driver at Indy with four
wins and one of those wins was the inaugural race in 1994. The only other drivers with more than one win
(two wins) are teammate Jimmie Johnson, who won
at the Brickyard last season and Tony Stewart. Jimmie may have two wins, but his finishes
for the other five races at IMS are dismal.
Tony’s performance is more consistent;
remaining around the Top 12 for most of his races. A driver without a glorius
win at the 2.5 mile track is notorius Kyle Busch. He
has raced at IMS only four times and each time he winds up in the Top 10. Well, except for last year, Kyle finished 15th.
NASCAR has been coming to the
Brickyard for the last fifteen years and each year provides something new and
exciting. 2009 at Indy will introduce
new tires, new drivers, and new double file restarts. Good luck with your fantasy picks and enjoy the race.
