Wide Open Racing

USG Sheetrock 400

Did you NASCAR fans enjoy the new TNT coverage that they aired for last weekend’s race at Daytona with their new wide open coverage with limited commercial interruption by local stations and extended letter box view with greater coverage of the race? Too bad this race at Chicagoland Speedway (CS) is the last time we will witness this new coverage until the 2008 season. The wide open coverage is very similar to DirecTV’s Hotpass without spending the $80.00 for the personal driver coverage. Since this weekend’s race is on a mile and a half track we will be able to see more of the track and more of the race simultaneously. I still love my FOX Sports, but I bet FOX, ESPN, and ABC will all be coming up with something similar and we NASCAR fans will reap the benefits of station competition.

The Checkered Four
(Current point standings)

Jeff Gordon (1st) Hendrick Motorsports – Chevrolet – I really think that you can pick Jeff as the 2007 NASCAR Nextel Cup champion right now. It was pretty evident early on that his teammate Jimmie Johnson was a sure pick last season and not too much guessing here either. We are half way through this season and Jeff has been dominating almost every race. Jeff has been to Chicagoland 6 times and has 4 Top 5’s and 4 Top 10’s.

Jimmie Johnson (4th) Hendrick Motorsports – Chevrolet – Check out these stats. Jimmie has raced at this track 5 times and has 4 Top 5’s and 5 Top 10’s. He has been denied a win, but his worst finish is 6th. It makes you think if Hendrick Motorsports is unstoppable this season?

Kyle Busch (8th) Hendrick Motorsports - Chevrolet – Kyle was awesome at Daytona last weekend. All you heard was that his car was loose the whole race and still he led laps and finished 2nd. Kyle Petty even mentioned that his father the “King” Richard Petty said that Kyle has a lot of talent. Whoever Kyle gets to race for next season will be surely getting a fantastic driver. Didn’t Dale Earnhardt ruffle a lot of feathers and race every race his hardest during his career?

Kevin Harvick (9th) Richard Childress Racing – Chevrolet – Kevin had a disastrous finish (34th) last weekend at Daytona, but he can come back and regain the position he lost in the point standings at CS. Kevin finished 4th at the last Sheetrock 400 and has the most wins (2) at Chicagoland out of the active driver roster.

Underdogs
(Current point standings)

Kasey Kahne (26th) Evernham Motorsports – Dodge – Even though Kasey hasn’t been doing nearly as well as he did last season, I think after his performance last weekend during the Pepsi 400 at Daytona when he was wrecked during lap 4 and came back to finish 9th, that he is turning things around. Kasey has the best chance at Chicagoland’s intermediate track to make something happen.

Reed Sorenson (29th) Ganassi/Sabates Racing – Dodge – There are a lot of last season rookie’s that faired pretty well at CS, but Reed did finish 7th his first and only time out on this tri-oval race track.

Most likely to be a lap down (Current point standings)

Carl Edwards (6th) Roush Fenway Racing – Ford – It is simple. Carl has raced at CS twice and didn’t do better than 20th.

Elliott Sadler (22nd) Evernham Motorsports – Dodge – Elliott has seemed to fallen under the unlucky Evernham star like his teammates Scott Riggs and Kasey Kahne. Last season when Elliott took over for Jeremy Mayfield, his future looked bright. Now, the #19 car will be fading into the darkness of CS because of only one Top 10 out of 6 starts.
