Sonnet of Speed
Forty three drivers are ready to race,
All chancing their luck trying to finish first,
Only one has the pole to set the pace,
If they come in last, they finish the worst.
Lap by lap cars operate at top speed,
Steering clear of the walls through every turn,
Passing and passing to try for the lead,
Maintaining every position they earn.
Who will take the checkered flag at the end,
And celebrate in victory lane?
The driver who is first at the last bend,
That has shown he/she is the driver to reign.
If you win in NASCAR, you've beat the best,
Take your trophy for defeating the rest.
Front Line Finishers
Jimmie Johnson
Hendrick Motorsports - Chevrolet
Point Standings: 5th
Jimmie statistics at CS are averaging one race short than most of his peers, but that has not hindered his impressive performance. Jimmie has 6 starts with a remarkable 4 Top 5's and 5 Top 10's. Oh, and a pole. The only thing left for Jimmie to complete his circle of achievement is a win.
Matt Kenseth
Roush Fenway Racing - Ford
Point Standings: 9th
Um, someone clear this one up for me. What great feats got Matt into 9th in points for the chase? I thought Jeff Burton was sneaky with his under toned success, but Matt nearly scared the stuff out of me. I don't know how Matt does it, but it looks like he will be making the chase again this year. Matt's record at CS is normal, but definitely not average. Out of 7 starts he has 2 Top 5's and 3 Top 10's. Maybe Matt could also be looking for his first win at Chicago.
Tony Stewart
Joe Gibbs Racing - Toyota
Point Standings: 12th
Good-bye to you. Tony is making his way towards the owner/driver arena next season with Haas CNC Racing. I say good luck and hope you can get some good drivers for your new team. Will it be Stewart Haas Racing or CNC Stewart Motorsports? Tony ditched his ride last weekend at Daytona, but hopefully he is feeling up to the challenge this Saturday at Chicago because he runs pretty well there. Tony has 7 starts with a whopping 5 Top 5's and 10's with 2 wins.
Kevin Harvick
Richard Childress Racing - Chevrolet
Point Standings: 13th
Kevin is ranked number one for the best average finish at CS (8th). His success at this track may be what he needs to put him into the chase for the Sprint Cup. Kevin is tied with Tony Stewart for the most wins (2) with 7 starts as well.
Last Lap Challengers
Clint Bowyer
Richard Childress Racing - Chevrolet
Point Standings: 10th
Clint runs positively well at Chicagoland Speedway for having only two starts. In 2006 he finished 9th and in 2007 he finished 10th.
Reed Sorenson
Chip Ganassi Racing - Dodge
Point Standings: 32nd
Reed in another driver like Clint Bowyer who has only had two starts at Chicago's 1.5 mile track with absolute success. Reed finished 7th in 2006 and 12th in 2007.
Bottom 35 Feeders
Kasey Kahne
Gillett Evernham Motorsports - Dodge
Point Standings: 8th
I really pray that I am wrong about Kasey's expected performance at Chicago. Kasey is only 33 points away from being 13th in the points and being out of contention for the Sprint Cup. Kasey if you pull out a Top 10 this weekend, I will not write another negative thing about you the rest of the season. Kasey's record at CS right now is 4 starts with a best finish of 23rd.
Martin Truex Jr.
Dale Earnhardt Incorporated - Chevrolet
Standings: 18th
Poor unfortunate driver. Martin got docked 150 driver points and his crew chief is suspended. Are teams really cheating or are they just alternating who gets to suck at matching a stock car to a template. At minimal, most teams has 36 races, 2 cars per race, which equals 72 chances to make a mistake. I guess penalties will just have to cycle through the garage until everybody gets hit. Martin your chances for the Cup were nearly depleted with your recent penalty and now with your lack luster performance at CS (2 starts with both finishes outside the Top 15), all I have to say is, "Better luck next year."

"Is Joe Gibbs Racing actually thinking about putting Joey Logano in the #20 once Tony Stewart abandons it in 2008?"
Matt - Pennsylvania
If Joe Gibbs put Joey Logano into the #20 Home Depot car full-time next year, I think he is making a huge mistake. Joe Gibbs needs to fill that ride with a seasoned driver and give Joey an opportunity to race in the Cup Series for a very few and specially selected tracks. Anymore than that and JGR is looking at disaster.

(3/16 7:30 PM PT)
The Facts:
While popular opinion might suggest that Johnson was brought to town to back up Clinton Portis, one of Johnson's former coaches has a bold prediction. "He will take over the running back position," said Dick Vermeil, who coached Johnson in Kansas City from 2003 to '05. "That's what I think. He'll push that guy right out of a job."
Diehards Line:
The Redskins signed Johnson last week to a three-year contract. Portis, who missed the final eight games last season after suffering a season-ending concussion, returns for his ninth NFL season. He's been the Redskins' starter since joining the team in 2004. Though he's two years older than Portis, Johnson has 755 fewer carries. While the two might begin training camp sharing the workload, Vermeil expects Johnson to open eyes at practice. He says Johnson helped push Priest Holmes, the Chiefs' incumbent running back in Kansas City seven years ago, and Vermeil says he'll push Portis now -- until he surpasses him.

(3/16 7:29 PM PT)
The Facts:
Bills HC Chan Gailey isn't prepared to name a starting QB, and anticipates holding an open competition going into training camp.
Diehards Line:
Gailey wouldn't rule out selecting a QB in the draft next month or pursuing a veteran in either free agency or by trade. Finding a starter has been a top priority for Gailey since he was hired in January. The quarterback position was unsettled last year after Trent Edwards lost his starting job to Ryan Fitzpatrick. Both return this season, as does untested third-stringer Brian Brohm.

(3/16 7:26 PM PT)
The Facts:
The Jets announced Tuesday they reached an agreement with Richardson, 38, on his third one-year deal with the team in as many years.
Diehards Line:
Richardson is a noted locker room leader and has remained remarkably effective late in his career. This will be Richardson's 16th NFL season. And after competing against LaDainian Tomlinson for years in the AFC West, Richardson, formerly a Chief, will now get to block for him.

(3/16 3:14 PM PT)
The Facts:
Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Eagles have agreed to terms with Bell on a one-year deal worth $1.7 million. The offer includes $500,000 in guaranteed money. The deal also includes incentives that could push the total value to over $2 million.
Diehards Line:
Because the Saints tendered Bell, a restricted free agent, at the lowest level, they have only a right to match the offer -- and they'll get no compensation if they don't. Either way, Bell will be under contract for one year. The question is whether it will be the Eagles or the Saints.

(3/16 12:38 PM PT)
The Facts:
Following up on an ongoing story. ... Russell is on site and particpating in the Raiders’ offseason program, the club confirmed without any other comment.
Diehards Line:
The Raiders have no plans to make Russell available to the media, so there won’t be any opportunity to see if the weight loss alluded to be director of player development Willie Brown is obvious to a casual observer. ESPN insider Adam Schefter, however, is comfirming the previously reported weight loss -- and a new throwing motion. ... Stay tuned.

(3/16 12:36 PM PT)
The Facts:
Havner, who scored four touchdowns on only seven catches during the 2009 regular season -- and one touchdown on two catches in a playoff loss at Arizona -- recently was arrested for DUI in California after crashing a motorcycle.
Diehards Line:
According to TheUnion.com, Havner lost control of a motorcycle, fracturing a scapula and suffering cuts to the back of his head and left arm. He was not wearing a helmet. ... As for the legal issues, Greg Bedard of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that while Havner was arrested, the prosecutor will have to decide whether to pursue charges. ... More as the story plays out.

(3/16 9:55 AM PT)
The Facts:
Following up on a previous item. ... Raiders director of squad development Willie Brown said on Comcast SportsNet Bay Area Monday that Russell has undergone a transformation in the offseason and wasn’t present at the first day of the offseason program tending to personal business. "He’ll be back in town today and ready to go (Tuesday),” Brown said.
Diehards Line:
Brown went on to say the QB has been in Phoenix getting in shape, a long-running rumor neither the Raiders nor Russell’s agents would confirm. “You’ll be surprised when you see him,” Brown said. “It’s quite a bit of weight that he’s lost. ... I don’t want to pin it down and say how much he lost but it will be a significant difference when you see him compared to last year." Stay tuned.

(3/16 9:46 AM PT)
The Facts:
Adam Schefter of ESPN tweeted, and PFT has separately confirmed, that Scaife signed his tender, giving him a one-year deal with the team for a guaranteed salary of $4,908,200.
Diehards Line:
As a fifth-year player, Scaife is one of the free agents who would have been unrestricted in a normal year but were instead restricted in the uncapped 2010. That allowed the Titans to tender him at 110 percent of his 2009 salary, rather than the franchise level, which would have been $5.9 million. The Titans franchised Scaife last year, and he signed the tender. ... In 2009 Scaife played in 14 games, starting 10, and caught 45 passes for 440 yards.

(3/15 8:26 PM PT)
The Facts:
Favre hasn't announced his intentions about playing in 2010, but we came across what appears to be a gigantic clue that he'll be back. That clue is this: A source familiar with the Vikings situation told Newsday's Bob Glauber that Favre was heavily involved in the recruitment process late last week for RB LaDainian Tomlinson.
Diehards Line:
According to Glauber, it is believed that Favre spoke to Tomlinson by phone and while recruiting effort ultimately came up short, Profootballtalk.com's Michael David Smith correctly suggests if Favre is actively trying to recruit players for the Vikings' 2010 roster, that's a pretty big clue that Favre himself plans to be on the Vikings' 2010 roster. ... Not that we should expect an announcement or official confirmation any time soon.

(3/15 8:24 PM PT)
The Facts:
Bulger’s future in St. Louis may be tenuous at best, but he remains under contract with the Rams. As such, he was among the Rams’ players on hand Monday for the start of the team’s off-season conditioning program.
Diehards Line:
Per the Post-Dispatch, the turnout Monday was good. Among the notable absences was running back Steven Jackson, but he was at Rams Park all of last week. ... Getting back to Bulger, all indications are the veteran signal caller will be moving on. But it doesn't look like he's ready to do anything to force management's hand.
