Unfortunately, I never had the
privilege to watch a NASCAR race when Dale Earnhardt Sr. was alive, but being
able to partake in the Nationwide series race last
Friday at Daytona gave me a glimpse of what the #3 awesomeness was like. NASCAR fans always get a little more excited
when Dale Earnhardt Jr. is leading a race, but
when you put Dale Jr. into his father’s #3 car and put
that car into Victory lane at Daytona, the word exciting pales in comparison to
the feelings of Earnhardt fans everywhere.
The showering of respect by fans holding up three fingers to commemorate
Dale Sr. and the honest-to-goodness elation of Dale Jr. was a historic moment
for anyone who loves the sport of NASCAR and the Earnhardt family.
Many drivers look at the upcoming
race at Chicagoland Speedway (CS) as an opportunity
to make up chase points or hold off other drivers who are trying to take their
spot. Many of the guys that are already
in the Top 12 and some who are falling less than 200 points short of the cut
off are going to be the same guys who finish in the Top 15. A few drivers may change a position, but none
should make large enough jumps and knock other drivers out of chase contention. Last year’s winner Mark
Martin is looking to gain ground and take home his first win of the
season at one of his favorite tracks.
Not feeling a win for our eldest active driver, but a Top five sure
makes sense.
Kasey Kahne, the biggest jumper in point standings (+4)
after last weekend’s race at Daytona has only eight more races to move up into
the last position to get into the chase, but with momentum from finishing 2nd
last Saturday and his 3rd place finish last season at CS, the #9
will be clawing through the points again.
The same holds true for the Jeff Gordon
camp. Jeff moved into the runner up spot
in the standings behind race winner Kevin Harvick by finishing the race 3rd at
Daytona and will maintain his position following the race at Chicagoland where he was again in the runner up position
last season. Jeff may not be winning
races this year, but he definitely has consistency on his side.
Too bad Brian
Vickers is out for this race at CS.
Brian is ranked #1 for the best average finish out of four races by
finishing 8th or better. Get
well soon.
Congratulations to Jimmie Johnson and his wife Chandra for the birth of
their new yet to be named baby girl.
