Happy 4th of July!!!
Forty is finished
It's a sad at the Franchitti-Judd house. As of Tuesday, July 2, 2008, Dario Franchitti has lost his NASCAR Sprint Cup ride until Chip Ganassi can get a sponsor to flip the bill for the #40 team. Luckily however, Dario does have the opportunity to run in the Nationwide Series if he so desires. With Dario originally on the entry list for the race this weekend at Daytona, that leaves only 45 drivers scheduled to qualify. Good news for the go or go homers, one more spot could possibly be up for grabs.
For all those Earnhardt family fans, Kerry Earnhardt is expected to make an attempt to qualify for the Nationwide Series race at Daytona. Go Kerry!!! The more Earnhardts the merrier.
Front Line Finishers
Kyle Busch
Joe Gibbs Racing - Toyota
Point Standings: 1st
Kyle seems to follow a certain pattern of racing this season. He just wins a lot. Granted last weekend at New Hampshire wasn't his best work, but we can blame Juan Pablo Montoya for that. Kyle's run at Daytona the last two races have resulted in Top 5's.
Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Hendrick Motorsports - Chevrolet
Point Standings: 3rd
Even though Dale has been with Hendrick some many months now, I can't help from feeling that whether there is camaraderie at Hendrick Motorsports, there is not so much on the race track. Restrictor plate tracks beg for drafting, but I think Dale is going to have to find friends outside the family this weekend. Dale has the respect and the talent to win at Daytona.
Jeff Gordon
Hendrick Motorsports - Chevrolet
Point Standings: 6th
Jeff is and will remain for quite some time the driver on the Sprint Cup series active driver roster that maintains the most wins (6). Jeff has suspension problems during the Daytona 500 this season, which placed him 39th. However, with a working stock car this Saturday night, Jeff will, without much effort, steal the win or get another Top 5 to add to his already accomplished 11 out of 30 races.
Kasey Kahne
Gillett Evernham Motorsports - Dodge
Point Standings: 10th
Normally, I wouldn't even think about Kasey performing well on this restrictor plate track, but that is exactly how he has competed for the last two races at Daytona. Kasey needs a good run this weekend because he is 10th in points and only nine more races to the chase for the Cup.
Kurt Busch
Penske Racing - Dodge
Point Standings: 18th
Ryan Newman may be the defending race winner of the Daytona 500, but teammate Kurt Busch is the driver that has had 2 Top 5's in the last two races at the beloved tri-oval. With his momentum from last weekend's win because he played it smart, he is in high gear for this race at DIS.
Last Lap Challengers (The Nostalgic Class)
Terry Labonte
Petty Enterprises - Dodge
Point Standings: 48th
Terry may be a fill in for Kyle Petty while Kyle does his commentating thing, but Terry is the real deal. I am glad to see him come out of retirement to race once again. It may be short lived, but Terry is going to tear it up as far as veteran racers are concerned. Terry has raced Daytona's 2.5 mile track 53 amazing times. Out of all those starts Terry averaged 11 Top 5's and 26 Top 10's. No win to date, but don't give up just yet. I think Terry still has a few Champions provisional to use if he does not qualify on time this Friday.
Sterling Marlin
Phoenix Racing - Chevrolet
Point Standings: 50th
Sterling is another veteran driver that has left a big dent at DIS. I am quite sure he does not have the champion free pass, but if Sterling gets into the show he will do some surprising things. This Saturday marks Sterling's 51st start. He has 12 Top 5's and 21 Top 10's. This man has been around this track quite a few times and still loves it.
Bottom 35 Feeders
Carl Edwards
Roush Fenway Racing - Ford
Point Standings: 4th
Carl did finally get his first Top 5 last July at Daytona, but that was the first one out of six starts. Looks like to me that since it was a hundred laps shorter than the Daytona 500, Carl happened to luck out in position. If Carl does fair well this weekend, than lady luck sure does like Office Depot.
Denny Hamlin
Joe Gibbs Racing - Toyota
Point Standings: 7th
Where has all the love for Denny gone? He is getting singled out for commenting on race conditions and people think that he is just plain whining about everything. Denny, take one for the team and stay in the back of the pack and keep your mouth closed for this weekend's party. A lot of drivers are going to be voicing their feelings about just anything and I don't want Denny to be involved. Denny has enough riding on his shoulders just trying to finish this 400 lap race. Four starts and nothing to show for his effort.

"Tony Stewart and Hendrick Motorsports; is that a possibility?"
Crystal - Ohio
There has been talk about Tony Stewart's new home and talk of Tony maybe teaming up with Dale Earnhardt Jr. to start their own Cup team. All that right now is speculation. Give the rumor mill some time to run its course and you will find out closer to the end of the season what Tony's intentions really are. I really don't think Hendrick Motorsports is in Tony's future though.

(3/16 7:30 PM PT)
The Facts:
While popular opinion might suggest that Johnson was brought to town to back up Clinton Portis, one of Johnson's former coaches has a bold prediction. "He will take over the running back position," said Dick Vermeil, who coached Johnson in Kansas City from 2003 to '05. "That's what I think. He'll push that guy right out of a job."
Diehards Line:
The Redskins signed Johnson last week to a three-year contract. Portis, who missed the final eight games last season after suffering a season-ending concussion, returns for his ninth NFL season. He's been the Redskins' starter since joining the team in 2004. Though he's two years older than Portis, Johnson has 755 fewer carries. While the two might begin training camp sharing the workload, Vermeil expects Johnson to open eyes at practice. He says Johnson helped push Priest Holmes, the Chiefs' incumbent running back in Kansas City seven years ago, and Vermeil says he'll push Portis now -- until he surpasses him.

(3/16 7:29 PM PT)
The Facts:
Bills HC Chan Gailey isn't prepared to name a starting QB, and anticipates holding an open competition going into training camp.
Diehards Line:
Gailey wouldn't rule out selecting a QB in the draft next month or pursuing a veteran in either free agency or by trade. Finding a starter has been a top priority for Gailey since he was hired in January. The quarterback position was unsettled last year after Trent Edwards lost his starting job to Ryan Fitzpatrick. Both return this season, as does untested third-stringer Brian Brohm.

(3/16 7:26 PM PT)
The Facts:
The Jets announced Tuesday they reached an agreement with Richardson, 38, on his third one-year deal with the team in as many years.
Diehards Line:
Richardson is a noted locker room leader and has remained remarkably effective late in his career. This will be Richardson's 16th NFL season. And after competing against LaDainian Tomlinson for years in the AFC West, Richardson, formerly a Chief, will now get to block for him.

(3/16 3:14 PM PT)
The Facts:
Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Eagles have agreed to terms with Bell on a one-year deal worth $1.7 million. The offer includes $500,000 in guaranteed money. The deal also includes incentives that could push the total value to over $2 million.
Diehards Line:
Because the Saints tendered Bell, a restricted free agent, at the lowest level, they have only a right to match the offer -- and they'll get no compensation if they don't. Either way, Bell will be under contract for one year. The question is whether it will be the Eagles or the Saints.

(3/16 12:38 PM PT)
The Facts:
Following up on an ongoing story. ... Russell is on site and particpating in the Raiders’ offseason program, the club confirmed without any other comment.
Diehards Line:
The Raiders have no plans to make Russell available to the media, so there won’t be any opportunity to see if the weight loss alluded to be director of player development Willie Brown is obvious to a casual observer. ESPN insider Adam Schefter, however, is comfirming the previously reported weight loss -- and a new throwing motion. ... Stay tuned.

(3/16 12:36 PM PT)
The Facts:
Havner, who scored four touchdowns on only seven catches during the 2009 regular season -- and one touchdown on two catches in a playoff loss at Arizona -- recently was arrested for DUI in California after crashing a motorcycle.
Diehards Line:
According to TheUnion.com, Havner lost control of a motorcycle, fracturing a scapula and suffering cuts to the back of his head and left arm. He was not wearing a helmet. ... As for the legal issues, Greg Bedard of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that while Havner was arrested, the prosecutor will have to decide whether to pursue charges. ... More as the story plays out.

(3/16 9:55 AM PT)
The Facts:
Following up on a previous item. ... Raiders director of squad development Willie Brown said on Comcast SportsNet Bay Area Monday that Russell has undergone a transformation in the offseason and wasn’t present at the first day of the offseason program tending to personal business. "He’ll be back in town today and ready to go (Tuesday),” Brown said.
Diehards Line:
Brown went on to say the QB has been in Phoenix getting in shape, a long-running rumor neither the Raiders nor Russell’s agents would confirm. “You’ll be surprised when you see him,” Brown said. “It’s quite a bit of weight that he’s lost. ... I don’t want to pin it down and say how much he lost but it will be a significant difference when you see him compared to last year." Stay tuned.

(3/16 9:46 AM PT)
The Facts:
Adam Schefter of ESPN tweeted, and PFT has separately confirmed, that Scaife signed his tender, giving him a one-year deal with the team for a guaranteed salary of $4,908,200.
Diehards Line:
As a fifth-year player, Scaife is one of the free agents who would have been unrestricted in a normal year but were instead restricted in the uncapped 2010. That allowed the Titans to tender him at 110 percent of his 2009 salary, rather than the franchise level, which would have been $5.9 million. The Titans franchised Scaife last year, and he signed the tender. ... In 2009 Scaife played in 14 games, starting 10, and caught 45 passes for 440 yards.

(3/15 8:26 PM PT)
The Facts:
Favre hasn't announced his intentions about playing in 2010, but we came across what appears to be a gigantic clue that he'll be back. That clue is this: A source familiar with the Vikings situation told Newsday's Bob Glauber that Favre was heavily involved in the recruitment process late last week for RB LaDainian Tomlinson.
Diehards Line:
According to Glauber, it is believed that Favre spoke to Tomlinson by phone and while recruiting effort ultimately came up short, Profootballtalk.com's Michael David Smith correctly suggests if Favre is actively trying to recruit players for the Vikings' 2010 roster, that's a pretty big clue that Favre himself plans to be on the Vikings' 2010 roster. ... Not that we should expect an announcement or official confirmation any time soon.

(3/15 8:24 PM PT)
The Facts:
Bulger’s future in St. Louis may be tenuous at best, but he remains under contract with the Rams. As such, he was among the Rams’ players on hand Monday for the start of the team’s off-season conditioning program.
Diehards Line:
Per the Post-Dispatch, the turnout Monday was good. Among the notable absences was running back Steven Jackson, but he was at Rams Park all of last week. ... Getting back to Bulger, all indications are the veteran signal caller will be moving on. But it doesn't look like he's ready to do anything to force management's hand.
