Hollywood California's stars are stalked by paparazzi so that
their every move is publicized for the whole world to see and fans are in the
now with their favorite actor, singer, model or whatever celebrity they can't
get enough of. But why don't our
superstars of NASCAR have the same kind of following? I would purchase tabloid magazines showcasing
the daily on goings of my favorite driver, steal glances of photos taken while
my driver was on an personal outing, and read endless
articles detailing his latest relationship or conflict with his crew
chief. Or would I? Once I really thought about the potential
repercussions of the exploitation of our precious racing athletes, I deduced
that if NASCAR Nation violated the unseen borders between the drivers and their
fans, our entire racing experience would change forever. No more would drivers want to be available to
endless charity fundraising events, fan contests, autographs at the track,
interviews before, during, or after a race, and anything that involved them
sacrificing their precious time because they would be so feed up with their
lack of privacy and the assault on their personal lives that the last thing the
drivers would want to do is give up any more of themselves. So I say to Hollywood,
keep your intrusive, obsessive maniacs away from the NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers
at Auto Club Speedway (ACS) this weekend because we the people of NASCAR Nation
respect our performers too much and we don't play that way.
ACS offers a more relaxed atmosphere
than what the drivers experienced last Sunday at Daytona. Drivers and crew chiefs alike will tell you
that this weekend's race is easy. For
some drivers like Matt Kenseth,
Jimmie Johnson, Jeff
Gordon, and Kurt Busch, they'll tell you
they expect nothing less than a win.
Jeff Gordon took home two Top 2's last season in California and both Matt
Kenseth and Jimmie Johnson won the races at ACS in
February and October; respectively. Kurt
Busch is looking for a rebound from his tragic Daytona ending and hoping to
best or match his last two races at ACS of Top 10's.
On a more somber note, I would like
to take a moment to remember the great Dale Earnhardt
Sr. who was taken from us today February 18 - nine years ago. He sure would have been proud to see one of
his DEI boys (Jamie McMurray) win the 52nd
annual Daytona 500 followed by his son that carries his name; Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Continue to rest in peace #3!
