Daytona 500

NASCAR bringing racing back

Thank you Mike Helton and thank you the National Association of Stock Car Racing. I have been going through withdrawals for the last two months. Not only is February the month of sweethearts, love, and Valentines, but it is the month of love for NASCAR fans. It marks the return of the reason why we, fans of auto racing, live. There are so many new things going on this season, that it is hard to pick what I should tell you about. Well one big wave is the debut of the car manufacturer Toyota in the Nextel Cup Series. We have to give them at least a luke warm welcome. Not quite sure how I feel about their involvement just yet. Many sports enthusiast ask why does NASCAR start off with the super bowl of Racing; the Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway (DIS). Well, NASCAR always tries to start things off with a bang. The racing gods could not have planned it better. If you wanted an exciting beginning to your NASCAR season you are going to get it.

Benny Parsons – We will miss you more than you know!!! We love you BP.
Bobby Hamilton – Another great driver has been lost, but not forgotten.

The Checkered Four

Chevrolet is definitely going to dominate the Daytona 500.

Jimmie Johnson – Rick Hendrick – Chevrolet – He started last season with a bang at Daytona, so who is to stop him now. Jimmie has to show a lot of face this year. Anybody coming off a championship has to drive better than any of his competitors. Coming off a 2006 high is enough to get him into the Top 5.

Tony Stewart – Joe Gibbs Racing – Chevrolet – He won the Budweiser Shootout already and he won the first Gatorade Duel. How much more does Tony have to prove that he has what it takes to win at Daytona. Dale Earnhardt Jr. used to be the one to watch at plate tracks, but Tony will be giving him a run for his money.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. – Dale Earnhardt Inc. – Chevrolet – Dale Jr. hasn’t taken the checkered flag at a plate track is about 2 seasons, but that does not stop him from making it consistently into the Top 5.

Jeff Gordon - Hendrick Motorsports – Chevrolet – He won the second Gatorade Duel and has a lot to prove this season. He might have made it into the chase last season, but this season he is geared toward winning the championship.

Underdogs

Juan Pablo Montoya – Chip Ganassi Racing – Dodge -Yeah, he is new to NASCAR and new to restrictor plate racing, but Juan is not new to winning. Coming off of many championships in Formula One, he will be making his mark and making some colleagues during the Daytona 500. He has shown to us thus far that plate racing does not scare him and drafting is something he is comfortable doing.

David Gilliland – Robert Yates Racing – Ford - He may not be considered a rookie because he ran too many races last season, but the Daytona 500 marks his rookie run at this race. He qualified first for the race and finished second to Tony Stewart for the first Gatorade Duel. He must be doing something right for somebody who is short on experience.

Most likely to be a lap down

Pick a rookie, any rookie. This season we start out with 6 rookies, but only about half even qualified to make the race at DIS and none of them have yet to prove themselves on resistor plate tracks; except for Juan Pablo Montoya.
