Week 9 - Buy & Sell Report
By Mike Beacom

Stock Market Report 10-28

Want to hear something crazy? Carson Palmer – the quarterback for the NFC’s top team through Week 8 – is owned in just 13.4% of ESPN leagues. Sounds nuts, right? Consider his numbers in four starts this season – eight touchdowns, just one interception and an average of 284 passing yards. In short, he’s been a top 10 fantasy passer who’s been left in the cold.

The Cardinals party may not last – a date in Big D proves a test in Week 9 – but Palmer has to be better than a majority of backup fantasy quarterbacks in your league, and certainly someone deserving of a roster spot.

Here are a few other waiver wire candidates to consider ...

RB Jonas Gray, Patriots
Ya, ya, I know… picking up a Patriots back is like fishing for dynamite. Still, for those desperate for running back help, Gray is at least a consideration. He carried 17 times in Sunday’s lopsided victory over Chicago, but nonetheless outperformed the rest of the Patriots backfield. He can become a short-yardage back, and could supplant Shane Vereen if successful with future opportunities.

WR Donte Moncrief, Colts
Reggie Wayne’s injury gave Moncrief a chance to shine and the rookie took advantage, notching seven catches (12 targets) and 113 yards against Pittsburgh. Moncrief is probably Andrew Luck’s big-body-receiver of tomorrow, but his performance will earn him additional time now, even after Wayne’s return.

WR Kenny Britt, Rams
The loss of Brian Quick means someone will need to step up in the Rams passing, right? Why not Britt, who annoyed fantasy owners for years in Tennessee but could be a solid No. 4 receiver now that he has assumed top billing in St. Louis.

TE Mychal Rivera, Raiders
Another week, another Raider on the waiver wire list. Gee, what does that say about this offense? In all seriousness, Rivera looked good against Cleveland and gained some trust in the passing game. Oakland has plenty of targets, but Rivera could become the “safety net” young Derek Carr is lacking.

The waiver wire isn’t the only way for fantasy owners to improve their roster; a well-crafted trade proposal can help every bit as much as picking up an up-and-coming free agent. Here is a look at this week’s buy and sell candidates:

{BUY}

RB LeSean McCoy, Eagles
Why buy Shady now? After Philadelphia faces the Texans this week they have dates against Carolina, Green bay and Tennessee – the worst three run defenses in the league. Sounds like the makings of a fine second half to what’s been a miserable season so far.

WR Brandon Marshall, Bears
The Bears are in a funk and Marshall has become a somewhat disruptive force –no matter, been here before. Marshall has overcome far worse and he always bounces back. The Bears and Jay Cutler will not lose faith, and neither should fantasy owners. Grab Marshall while he’s on the cheap.

{SELL}

WR Jeremy Maclin, Eagles
Maclin is coming off a 12-catch, 187-yard and two-touchdown performance. But that’s what he does – the textbook boom-or-bust fantasy receiver. With Maclin, fantasy owners are guaranteed two or three days like this, but also sluggish performances like his 16-yard effort against the Giants two weeks ago. He’s better trade bait than he is championship roster material.

WR Mohamed Sanu, Bengals
A.J. Green is expected back any day now, and when the big guy returns it will signal the end to Sanu’s honeymoon. Green commands most of Andy Dalton’s attention, and even when double-teamed still produces solid fantasy points, leaving little for Sanu and the team’s other weapons. Sanu has registered 120-plus yards in two of his last three starts, so he might bring back some of value in return.
