Week 8 - Buy & Sell Report
By Mike Beacom

Stock Market Report 10-21

Few college quarterbacks convert well to playing a skill position at the pro level. The learning curve, reluctance to giving up the quarterback position... any number of things can derail the transition.

For several years it appeared as though Denard Robinson belonged to this group. At Michigan he was a record-breaking dual-threat quarterback; in the NFL he’s mostly been anonymous – until last Sunday. Robinson gave the lifeless Jacksonville offense a pulse with his 127 rushing yards in a win over Cleveland. Suddenly, he’s a viable fantasy pickup. The Jaguars have little else, and Robinson has a green light to keep seeing double-digit touches.

Here are a few other waiver wire candidates to consider ...

QB Colt McCoy, Redskins
You can’t blame the post-game reporter for calling Colt McCoy ‘Kirk.’ Before Sunday, he was last known for his play at the University of Texas. Now he’s heading home, fresh off an 11 of 12 performance, to challenge the rival Cowboys. The Dallas defense is imposing upfront, but beatable in the secondary, and there’s no doubt McCoy will be throwing plenty of Monday night. He could be a viable one-week fill in at quarterback for those in need.

RB Bryce Brown, Bills
C.J. Spiller is done and Fred Jackson is on a shelf for a few weeks, clearing the way for Brown to step in for time being. The one-time Eagles backup is expected to split time with Anthony Dixon but most predict Brown will post better numbers. No disagreement here.

The waiver wire isn’t the only way for fantasy owners to improve their roster; a well-crafted trade proposal can help every bit as much as picking up an up-and-coming free agent. Here is a look at this week’s buy and sell candidates:

{BUY}

QB Drew Brees, Saints
People are wondering what’s wrong with Drew Brees when the answer is simple: nothing. So what if he struggled late against Detroit; even elite quarterbacks fail when trying to make plays. Fact is, Brees has been expected to do too much for too long, but he’s still doing it this season – his 1,916 yards are fourth most so far this season, his 11 touchdowns tied for 11th. As Aaron Rodgers would say, ‘Relax.’

RB Jamaal Charles, Chiefs
Many of those who picked Charles early in their fantasy drafts still have a bitter taste from his frosty start to 2014. Truth is he hasn’t been half bad in recent starts – 267 rushing yards on 55 carries (4.85) and four touchdowns in his last three games. Test the waters to see if he can be had on the cheap in your league.

{SELL}

QB Tom Brady, Patriots
An example for how trading fantasy players can resemble the stock market. A few weeks ago buying Brady was advised because it was clear he was unfairly being blamed for his team’s poor start. Now, though, he’s a prime sell candidate because sentiment has swung too far the other direction. He’s coming off a three-game stretch in which he’s tossed nine touchdowns and no interceptions, but don’t expect that to last. The Patriots’ next four opponents are Chicago, Denver, Indianapolis and Detroit. That’s trouble.

RB Chris Ivory, Jets
Ivory had 125 yards of offense on 25 touches last week against a struggling New England defense. Big deal. Fantasy owners can ill afford to forget what Ivory is at the core – an unreliable big-play back who has disappointed more than he has excited in recent years. Use last week’s performance as bait and move him fast.
